You dont need to be in very good shape for 15 miles so don't worry.
When I was in the army we had around 50kg of stuff on us on trips much longer than that and everyone could do it (some in really bad shape).

Of course it's a good idea to get in shape, just saying

were they marches or a hikes?.

a hike is a hell of alot more physically demanding than a march. Especially given the usual lack of good surfaces e.g. decent paths.

I AGREE WITH METHOD.

Ramp up the incline on the treadmill and put it just above the speed you would be pounding the mountain or whatever at. I've been told you have to have your heart at the target rate for at least twenty minutes for cardio to work. I think that is bullshit because it's just far too hard and I hate cardio. You want to be sweating so much you can't actually wear your gym shirt for another session because of the stench!

This is very good cardio because your recovery time will gradually get better allowing you to exert yourself more.

I'd also recommend playing squash because it keeps your heart pumping without you really realizing it.

Variable-paced jogging seems what you need to do. Start off slow-medium and build up to medium speed. You'll probably tire quickly if you are not in good shape (*points to self) but try and retain the medium speed for even just a short distance. Before you stop, sprint. Take a 2 min (and I mean 2 minutes aka 120 seconds) break and then repeat. It might take you a little longer to bring yourself up to medium pace again because your legs will burn, but with practice you'll cover more and burn less.

Not much else to say really..keep drinking water and on your first few days don't push yourself too much otherwise you'll ache like crazy and make the next few days un-necessarily painful.

Your muscles build after you have rested (they regenerate), not during your exercise. So get proper sleep.

Thats medium intensity interval training, which i already mentioned. I always just do 2 mins run, 1 min rest x say 6 repetitions. Every other day but swap one for something like a 1.5mile run.

Hike with a weight vest on. Start low, at like 10 or 15 lbs. Work your way up to 45 or 50

Well they are called marches but most of them were in swamps, thick forests etc

15 miles ain't hard, he's right. If you really need to prepare, then just ride a bike around as much as possible. And pack light.

Find an oval, do a lap. Then do suicides/doggies for a bit. Then do another lap. That'll get you fit real fast.
