I went away for a week on vacation an came back to find out my external hard drive won't work properly. It was off for the week. When I tried to plug it back in, the computer detected it but it disappeared from My Computer about 2 seconds later. It would repeat this until I unplugged it again.

It isn't new and I have about 170GB on it so I'd like to be able to recover it

Any ideas as to what might be causing this?

Is it powered from USB or separate power supply?

To be honest I don't even know what brand it is There's no brand name on it. It's 300GB, connects via USB 2.0 and runs on AC power.

@link: yeah, I've tried all the USB ports on my case.

In the device manager, it says WDC WD32 00AAKS-75VYA0 for the few seconds it is recognized but I can't find anything on google related to it

Fix't. I should've known this but I looked for regular internal HD's and found the model number. Turned out to be a WD Cavier 320GB SATA drive. My guess is the external case was bad.

Thanks menzo.
