Been noticing my 8800 GTS 320mb has seeming to get a little hot recently, but without any problems. Then comp had been on a few hours but been idle for couple, when I load up Empire Total war and bam!! artifacting on the menu screens, manage to shut the game down and get to desktop but then I got a warning beep and it locked up. This happened twice and after the 2nd time I was still getting artifacting in widows when I rebooted.
I left it cool down for bit, took out the card and cleaned it and reseated it.
On reboot GPU-Z gave a temp reading off about 65, start up total war left the menu on for about a minute and checked GPU-Z and it come up to like 83!!
So I'am guessing the card is on its way out but why has it suddenly started running so hot, and is there anything I can do??

clean the card from any dirt. At any rate 83°C isn't all that hot

Did clean it, but like I say after couple of minutes on the empire total war menu it artifacts and locks up my computer same when I tried the CSS graphics stress test.

Use EVGA precision or something like it to set manually set the fan speed on 80% or higher.

83 is nothing, the G80 can safely take over 100

But as I say it artifacts and locks up the computer, so clearly something isn't right...

Try cleaning it out with canned air or an air compressor, dust can clog the airflow and have bad impact on the cooling.

Yeah hoping I sorted it now, after a bit fiddling about, such as lifting the EVGA, sticker on cowling round the heatsink so I could get at the screws, I managed to remove it. The end of the heatsink by the fan was totally clogged with dust and crap, completely blocking the airflow, cleared all that and out and any other dust I could. Already it appears to be running cooler at idle, so just gonna stress test it on some games and stuff.
Thanks for everyone who tried to help!

Worked fine all yesterday after I cleaned it!
Bootup today go to play Total War and it dies it again, reboot and now it fucked, corruption all over the screen even when booting, and now the desktop res is set to 640x420 or whatever and it won't let me change it.
I just don't get why it seemed to work fine again and has now gone titally fubar!!

Well seen as it was Birthday yesterday, luckily I have a bit of spare cash to get a new card. Budget is like £100, Here's 3 I've looked at, any advice or alternative suggestions would be greatly appreciated:
Did look at a 9800GT but aren't they just virtually the same as below, the prices are virtually the same anyway so
XFX GTS 250: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu … ubcat=1402
XFX 4850 "XXX edition": http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu … subcat=938

I have a E8400 with 2 gig of ram, which would give me best performance at 1640x1050 with some AA. If anyone else has any other suggestions within my budget, suggestions are welcome, but I'd prefer to use overclockers as I can collect directly from them.

Yeah I seen mixed reviews some saying they are more or less equal, and brand preference is the decide, which does make me lean towards Nvidia, whereas other reviews say the 4850 is the way to go. I'm not sure atm, thing is may be going to get a replacement tomorrow, so a decision must be made...

Are you talking about the 9800gtx+ reviews cause the new catalyst drivers improves the hd4850 about 5-10%

The 8800GTS/9800GTX/9800GTX+/GTS250 is pretty much exactly as fast as the HD4850. On some games one card wins slightly, on others the other card wins slightly.

460W can be enough, depends on the quality of the PSU. Make/Model?

the 320MB version of the 8800GTS?  i would say the 512MB is, but not the 320.

If you want CUDA (for GPU processed F@H or in-game physics) then go with nVidia.

320MB and even 640MB versions are just way outdated. 8800GTX is still king in the castle though, since it was a MONSTER back in the day when it first came out.

not being a smartass, i'm just asking.  is the 320/640MB version really on par with the 4850?

The 8800GTS 512MB is based on the G92 which is considerably faster than the G80 based 8800GTS 320/640MB. The G80 is just outdated

The PSU is an Akasa not sure on the model.
Thanks for the help! I'am leaning towards the 250 atm just because I prefer Nivida and it is supposed to be more energy efficient and quieter.
