Guys im having some problems with my PC at the moment and thought one of you experts could help me out....

Firstly, after i press Login at the login screen, the "connecting to account server" box comes up and stays there for minutes!!! It never used to take so long!

Secondly, and more importantly, whenever i try to restart or shutdown, it just stays on the desktop, nothing happens, and i have to turn the PC off by holding down its power button for 5 seconds. ??????

I have Norton and 2 different spyware programs...

Any ideas guys?
Any help would be much appreciated!

An obvious one but....

Have to tried diabling your AV, firewall AND Windows XP Firewall.

Once I realised that Zone Alarm was preventing BF2 from connecting to the 'net I was able to change the settings to allow it to do so

First of all, Norton sucks and it blocks all your games because it believes that they are "dangerous". Go into alternative and press allow on the icons of your games. or you can just uninstall Norton since it sucks balls
I think you should keep your spyware programs though. They help a lot.

Yeah, steer well clear of Norton it realy sucks ass

Does anyone else/anything else use your net connection? When my brother goes on MSN on our other computer it screws up my login to BF2

Norton Sucks because most people dont know how to work with it,

XP firewall i dont use because it sucks it has some leaks and doesnt stop the nasty infiltrating Trojans and other crap, My norton blocks about 20 till 30 Infiltrating things a day,

most AV or IS programs ask the User if you should allow this Application to work on the Net. that doesnt sounds stupid to me, like if a AV or IS program would allow anything to connect on the net you soon will have that some nasty Adaware will not be blocked and start buggin you with pop ups and other crap.

always when u installed something Norton will ask to you if u want to allow it. if u select ''Yes, i allow that this program to open all the needed ports'' then norton will allow the Game to open the ports he need to run online.

"connecting to account server" if it worked normally before it obvious that it isnt ur PC , somedays the account server is laggy and it will take around the 5 or maybe 8 minutes to connect. if ur on just go to ur BFHQ you will see the Stats loading time is way to high to be normal.
how do i know this? well, i started up BF2 , i logged in and went out for a smoke, i wen back after 5 minutes and he was still connecting...i was like WTF? but just after 30 seconds later i came back he connected(it took about 5 - 6 minutes total) and i had the main menu...but i wanted to look at my stats...and hell....that loaded like for 3 minutes to show up the whole stats...but the online gaming on server went perfectly ...

"connecting to account server" If that takes to long its the EA stats server that is Laggy just wait longer then normal but it will load.

Norton sucks because it uses a huge ammount of system resources compared to other AV systems and because it hangs when it tries to scan certain file types. Oh and its expensive

Having used it for 3 years I gave up because there are far better alternatives, not because I can't use it!

Norton works just fine, you can ad any program to the trusted aplication list in norton as you can do with any firewall.
I have very good pings with norton and no game disturbance.
your problem with the start button could be anything...but I think its a program hanging, something that starts up with windows.
you can check that if you type "msconfig" in the run box. you can also disable all programs there that you do not want to start with windows.

Octavarium,
Norton using to much memory? well, if ur talking about the AV , but i use the IS. AV sucks becaus they stop the viruses when they already are inside...the IS stops them from the outside and uses less memory then the AV.

Have you done anything to your PC since you started playing?  I read that you said "it never used to take this long", which to me means that you're currently having a problem that did not exist before, in which case it would have nothing to do with your AV or router or any of that.  Since you also say that it freezes up when shutting down, this to me indicates that your problem lies with BF2 itself.  I would recommend completely uninstalling and then reinstalling the game.  If you've done a clean up of any files on your computer lately, you may have deleted a file important to BF2, or you may have a virus that Norton isn't picking up on that is affecting BF2.  My girlfriend recently had (what I believe to be) a virus on her notebook - it took her literally 20 minutes to start up and another 20 minutes to shut down her computer, as well as horrendous load times for some programs - it wasn't picked up on her norton IS and the computer was only 2 months old so it wasn't faulty equipment.

Again, try reinstalling the program and see if that fixes any problems for you - it's the simplest and least costly move you can make at this point in time.  Also, next time you have a PC problem, post in the tech section

Not only that, but it misses a huge portion of active viruses and their derivatives. Seriously, scan an old infected machine with Norton, let it clean it, then scan with a program like NOD32 or the bit too aggressive Kaspersky AV. The difference between what they catch will make you wonder why you bother with the memory hog Norton.

Norton is strange man. I use Norton System Works 2005 (has AV) and it does a great job protecting my machine and keeping it in great shape. Causes problems with BF2 though.

If I end all the background Norton processes before starting BF2 the "connecting to account server" box sits there for ever. I have to end the Norton processes after starting BF2 by alt-tabing out of the game. Also, Nortons "Internet Worm Protection" function constantly trips on BF2 even though I put BF2.exe on the allow list. I am forced to disable internet worm protection if I want to keep Nortin running while I play BF2.
