My Windows folder is HUGE.  On Vista x64, it's taking 24.4 GB of space.  Shouldn't it only be around 8 or so max?

mine is 20GB
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I'm on Vista x64 and it's only 9.5GB.  I guess you guys have way more programs installed than me?

no, it's not the Program Files folder, it's the actual Windows folder itself.

so that's not a strange size?  i'm running out of room on this 160GB OS drive (figured it'd be large enough for an OS and games...guess not)

Well, some program files are stored in the Windows folder.  For example, I see a Left 4 Dead and a Zune folder in my Windows folder.  So I think that has something to do with it.  Otherwise how can mine be 9.5GB and yours 24GB?

check your winxs folder. It stores multiple copies of dll's in order to let multiple applications run in Windows without any compatibility problem.

Seriously? Zune I can understand, L4D no. I've got to reinstall L4D to verify.. if it stores anything in the system directory.. RAGE.

Well my copy of L4D isn't legit, so that might have something to do with it.  I see some Nero files in there too.  Also, I just checked my winsxs folder and now my Windows folder is reading 24GB.

Don't touch that folder, it can brick your system. The only real way of shrinking the folder is to uninstall programs you don't need anymore

fucking a.  CCleaner only removed 1GB or so.  question: if i use something like Norton Ghost to image my drive, can i restore the image to a non-identical drive?  say, a larger one (with more cache perhaps)?

remove hibernation files (or something like that) Disk Cleanup. Also lower the amount of restore points and the max amount of space you allow them to take in total.
