Ok so i have a 1GB 4870 and i found a 1GB 4890 for a really good price.

I know i can crossfire a 4870 and 4890 together but would it be worth it? i hear crossfired 4890's give similar performance to a GTX295. Both cards are 1GB and both are GDDR5, so would they work well together? or would the 4890 run at the 4870's speed? on the other hand I also found a really well priced 1GB 4870, its $90 (AUD) cheaper than the 4890. so would i be better going for that?

the 4890 would drop performance so the 4870 could keep up. Basically what you'd have would be a 4870 Crossfire.

You'd be better off buying the 4870, unless you were planning on getting another 4890 in the future.

not really planning on getting 2 4890's... if i get another 4870 (or 4890) i know i will be able to sell them when i want to buy new tech. i have some mates who arent very good with "tech" but play alot of games. so i can always sell my old stuff to them

No. In XFire both cards are used to their potential, not to the potential of the worse card.

5. What happens when graphics cards with varying memory speeds and engine clocks are paired together?

A. In this scenario, overall performance will be adjusted to match the memory speeds and engine clocks of the lower clocked card. To obtain ideal performance, graphics cards should be paired correctly.

Listen to this guy he knows what hes talking about your not using sli even a 3870 would improve your performance.

Wait 4890 is slower thatn 4870 it thought the higher the number the better the card. Please don't abuse me tech experts!

the 4890 would be lowered to the performance of the 4870 if put into crossfire with it.

You are also wrong with the higher number thing, but the 4890 is more powerful than the 4870.

generally, this is how the naming scheme works:

Xxxx - that capitalized X is the series of the card, eg: 3 series, 4 series.  a higher series card is more powerful than a lower series.  but...
xXxx - this number defines range.  with ATi, 3 = low end, 6 = midrange, 8 = enthusiast
xxXx - this number is arranged in order of worst to best, eg: 3<5<7
xxxX - not really sure tbh.

these are all general though.  a current gen, budget enthusiast card may be better than a previous gen, top of the line enthusiast card.  for instance, a 4830 is better than a 3870.

oh, and as for the 4870 vs 4890.  i would wait a week or two and wait for prices to settle down.  the 4870 prices might drop, or the 4890 prices might drop.  something needs to happen to avoid making venn diagrams with all the card models ATi has.  as of right now, the 4890 is only about 10% faster than the 4870, while being around $40 more expensive.  it does run more energy efficient though, and overclocks a bit better.

Both cards WILL run at their rated clocks. As they both have 1GB GDDR5, that will not cause issue.

And before you quote something I had trifire and I could run the cards unsynced at different clocks.

BUT I must warn you. Having mixed CF is VERY rare hardware setup and you WILL get in driver support troubles eventually. Hence dumb the HD4870 ASAP for another HD4890

and I take that as a fking insult. I write in over 8 forums and many of them have way different usage of signing. Sometimes I forget which one is which, especially in HIGH FEVER.
