Since we can't have all these sexy flamewars in the official thread, let's have this one, and bump it up whenever things get off topic.

Make sure you provide a link to related posts in the other thread, or nobody will get shit.

I'll start:

The sole purpose of Digital to analog converter is just what its initials say. DAC does not output any power, thats why we use amps. What DAC does output is not power but signal. Every signal needs to get amplified if you want to hear sound and standalone DACs don't have amplifiers hence no volume knob on any of them.
Analogue audio "signal" is the same as what you get out of the amplifier, just weaker. There are single-chip DACs with a powerful-enough output to drive a pair of headphones.

Normal headphones don't need a lot of power to run. You can plug an amplifier into an MP3 player without turning the volume to the bottom.
If I understand you correctly plugging headphones into Passive RCA out will power them? Is that what you are saying?
It all depends on how the output source is designed. Many DACs and such are current-limited, as they're made to power loads of a couple of kilo-Ohm, such as amplifiers. Others are designed to power <100Ohm loads, and are thus much more powerful. There is more than one kind of DAC out there, you know. It's an active component.

Started here.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Jeeesus you resident Tech-geeks just can't let a chance to polish your technological dick down, can you?

Have fun

protip: When someone asks about 'x' technology in the tech-thread, use PM; when a discussion develops in a Tech thread that pertains to all two members of BF2s the world's population, use a PM. I know the rest of us Forum lurkers don't get to see you flex your DAC-resistance wang around in circular motions (or should that be oscillations, or pulses, or wavelengths, or whatthefuckever)- but still, it's more practical and commonsense.

Have a nice day!

Cause it's off-topic there- that's a thread for technology e-Boners as Flaming eloquently (and rightly) put it. This is for all the peripheral talking and bickering that people want to do over their new toys. Well, that's the conceited premise anyway... what it is in all fact is a thread for the resident techgeeks to battle out their silly BF2s hierarchy to establish the pecking order of, well, the size of their hard-drives, shall we say.

Have fun audiophiles/F@H philanthropists/certified electricians.

Ok so lets see, this CODEC (not DAC but CODEC) has: 1.a DAC (for converting digital to analog  2.a headphone driver (for driving phones, prolly opamp based preamp)  3....

So gais, at what point would one notice a difference with a portable amp connected to an iPod?

It's still a single-chip solution that takes in digital and spits out an amplified signal.

And no matter what, if you hook up an oscilloscope to the output of any DAC, you'll get the same result as if you were to hook it up to an amplifier after it.

I didn't dispute all in one combos but DAC still only does converting and sending signal to amp.

Jens if you want better sound then amp is always the way to go no matter if you are using earphones or headphones. Change will be more noticeable with more power hungry headphones though. Dedicated amps amplify the signal better than the ones in portable devices-less distortions and nice black sound. My recommendation is get a portable amp for some good headphones.

My point is that there is no difference between the signal and what an amplifier spits out, other than the power. If you connect a speaker to any sort of analogue audio signal, you get the same sound as if you were to put an amplifier in between, just weaker.

And a portable amp won't do much good if the source is crap. The distortion caused by the source is also amplified.

Here's a question audio-techgeeks, seeing as I can't be bothered to research the solution myself:

How could I run KRK Rokit studio monitors through a PC (Creative) sound-card to power my games and system audio?

Speakers in question: http://www.krksys.com/product_rokit.php

I ask because I'm partway through building a production/DJ studio and I'm considering cashing in my pointless gaming 5.1 surround system.

I would recommend going balanced and get the best out of them:
If you do decide to go balanced then here is how I have it set up:

(right click zoom for full size)

If you will go unbalanced then you will need this cable:
https://www.shrani.si/f/12/oL/1LNsqg5k/rca-jack.jpg
Stereo jack goes into soundcard and one RCA into each monitor. If you're connecting a sub to it then these RCA go into the sub and then from the sub additional RCAs to the monitors.
