It's hard to end these things by brute force, the French recently managed to free some rich French hostages who were for some reason boating in their yacht in the region (wtf) but that was at the cost of a hostage being killed by the pirates. I'd imagine saving one man from a group of pirates would be pretty hard, especially on a boat. Especially on a boat that isn't even that big

I just heard reports of another US ship with lots of Italian crew being hijacked, it's ramping up pretty bad this month, only a matter of time until the Somalian ports are attacked by someone

I doubt they risk getting paid with marked bills.

Have the ship owners hire mercenaries, have international law include statutes on trespassing. In the eventuality of a pirate entering a ship, the mercenaries may, however they see fit, eliminate a threat from boarding a shipowners property. It would, in effect, be the same as hiring private guards on your property. That way taxpayers won't have to pay for military deployments and ship owners would get their necessary protection provided they pay a fee which would be significantly lower than a potential ransom payment reaching millions.
can't
shipping insurance would actually skyrocket if they even had guns aboard which would make shipping fees for the products inflate

I get to be black? Sweet.

I like option A (which might be difficult), giving them marked bills or a No Country For Old Men-esque tracker.

Better than waiting for them to kill the Captain.

You're such a dolt, do you know it's the French that are one of the few (if not only) in the area to have actually done anything about these hostage situations. The French have already done miles more than your giant navy (wait, Switzerland doesn't have a fucking navy) has done in the area.

I don't understand why insurance will skyrocket if they have guns aboard. Shouldn't insurance be increasing anyway because of the fact that there are fucking pirates taking over ships?

Besides, the shipowners would probably make the charterers foot the bill OR since frustration of the contract between the owner and charterer would also take place, it would benefit the owner to pay extra insurance rather than getting no payment at all.

This obviously depends on how often the ships are being hijacked and whether hiring any help is at all worth it.

True that. In fact I think insurance companies would prefer ships being able to defend themselves rather than having to fork out millions in ransom fees.

Yes we do have a navy. We've got a Supercarrier in our lac (The lac de Neuchatel), it's awesome, you see a puddle, and this carrier in it...future technology man, you don't have it. We do

We've also got a couple of kayaks with .50s, they're badass, you have no idea!

If you had 1 sniper for every pirate, it doubt it would be that hard to take them out.

No srsly, what we need to do is have the crew ride around the ships in fast golf carts, with machetes. When the hook comes up, they cut the rope. Or they should have electrified railings.

What do you do?
A- Order for marine sharpshooters to simultaneously kill all four pirates.
B- Give them their measly 2 million random. (Whats that compared to the piracy of the Fed? thats baby stuff.)
C- Sit around and do nothing while knowing that you have no experience in this sort of thing.
D- Hope.
What is wrong with patroling the waters and sinking any pirate ship that they come across. I am not sure how this should even be an issue.

I am not a sailor, so I really do not understand how pirates are able to board these massive ships so easily. It would seem to me all ya gotta do is NOT STOP.

I would imagine that along with ak-47s the pirates would also have RPGs which, if aimed correctly at the engine or on vulnerable areas, could seriously fuck up the ship

Would it not be cheaper to arm a ship than to pay a ransom everytime they round the horn of Africa? Just blow the fuckers out of the water.

Rofl! Road kill!

Why not just change the damn rules and arm the ships with MK19s and M134s? Not hard TBH, alot cheaper.

My cousin just passed the pirate zone on his vessel, same type and company as the Maersk Alabama but with more powerful engines. Basically the pirates go for the slower ships which also can't move too well. Ships that sit low in the water (like tankers) are also vunerable because their lower height means less distance to throw a grapple. He said he was amazed how they managed to grab the ships though, saw loads of them quite close together.

What about option "Whatever the letter is": Try to get the captain back any which way necessary, and in the long run send E.g. peacekeepers to guard Somali harbors, thus preventing pirate resupply. This would also facilitate arresting and seizure of vessels/freight.

Suddenly all you yanks are interested in the pirate problem.
