For starters, im a complete apple hater

but i was given an ipod nano (1st or 2nd generation) and ive downloaded the latest itunes

the ipod has about 2 and a half gig of music on it already.

ive heard if i sync it up now, it will sync to the itunes on the pc, which has nothing and will delete all the music

is this true? and what program should i use to sync it without losing the music

Yes it will, only the music in the library will sync to the iPod.

as for programs to sync it without losing it, i have no idea.

Configure iPod or iPhone for manual management

If you have iTunes 7* or later follow these instructions.

Connect iPod or iPhone to your computer.
Open iTunes.
Select iPod or iPhone in the Devices list.
Click the Summary tab and select "Manually manage music and videos."
Click Apply.
When manual management is enabled, you can still sync some content automatically. Select any content tab such as Video to enable automatic syncing for that type of content.
Source.

Once this is done, you drag your library from your music to the device in the side, and it will add it all.
