I got a friend who is building an HTPC. We've got the parts pretty much narrowed down, we just need a sound system and I know we have some audiophiles here, so step up.

Budget isn't really firm right now. So if you have a high end and a mid end option with prices, I'd love to hear both.

But the system will be used for movies and music. No gaming of any kind, just movies and music.

GO!

What kind of speakers are going to be used? 5.1 or 2.0

Speakers: Teufel Theater 1 600 €
AV-Receiver: Onkyo 606     430 €

Would say that's mid end. I have them as well and it's great. Clear sound when watching movies and very good sound for music.

Needs budget guidelines.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

5.1 system, Sup.

Freezer, just give me what a mid-end system would cost versus a high-end. I don't know what kind of money is available to throw at this thing, so I can't give you a budget.

There are systems for $50 and $50 000 that will do pretty much the same thing. We need a budget.

You could go with one of Blue Sky's active setups like this one http://www.abluesky.com/asp/catalogue/c … linkid=17#
Why get an expensive receiver if you don't need all the functionalities it has to offer. You will get better sound with these for less.

Seconded.

There are speakers in every price range. The budget must be defined.
