I posted a comment on the product page and was immediately bombarded by hardline fanboys who would hear nothing but good about the Kindle. So I guess market defensiveness extends beyond car brands, sports teams, PC/Mac/AMD/Intel, Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Eh, I guess it's everywhere.

Here's my thing: if I want to read something on paper, I'm going to read it on paper. Black text on a white sheet of paper. That's all. No scrolling, no push-buttons -- just page-turning. Computers were brought to the home to make your life easier (and increase mfg profits), but it has been my experience that when they act up and instead make it harder, they make it bloody miserable...until you fix whatever problem they were having and find out that it was due to some manufacturer or programmer oversight and not your own error.

In my biased opinion, how does an overpriced, oversized calculator that could easily get sat on beat something you could snatch off a shelf, throw across a room, run over with a truck and drop in the tub...and be just fine with a liberal application of hot air and some wiping? I can heft a book, flip the pages rapidly from cover to cover to get a papery breeze, scroll by means of my thumb stuck between two key pages...the list goes on. For me, books represent a break from computers. I couldn't read a book knowing that somewhere in the background was a hyperlink with my name on it.

In Kindle's defense, the idea is ingenious. Being able to pack an entire library into a notepad full of bits and bytes is awesome, and useful for people who travel a lot or don't want to whip open a laptop to read an e-book. In fact, give it an 8 1/2 x 11 inch screen and slice 80% from the cost and I'll consider it for office documents. But otherwise, it's not for me.

But whatever you do, don't downtalk a Kindle at Kindle's home base.

***

Addendum:

Faster Page Turns

*Pages now turn 20% faster on average.
You mean it was noticeably slow? Human fingers can turn a page before their eyeballs catch up.

*amazonkindle (marked on top of the device so you never forget)
I don't like watermarks on TV shows. Why should that logo be burning itself into my eyeballs when I'm trying to concentrate on a novel?

>.<

Addendum 2:

Yes, I actually had an opportunity to play with one for awhile, but the experience was like biting into a handful of stale Cheez-its.

I erased it. I was tired of getting e-mail notifications.

If you want to check the state of things, look for a low-star review that's reasonably written. It's probably going to have low 'helpful' ratings and a few knee-jerk snide comments from people who love the thing and don't want to hear that anyone thought otherwise.

That don't count!

But on that subject, video game chess only beats real chess in that you can play with others online. In actual chess you can use a pawn as a small club to smack someone's king across the floor. In a game all you can do is type 'lol gg.'

You have to be aware that it is not uncommon for the employees of these companies to go through amazon reviews and rate their own products highly.

Don't always just put it down to fanboyism. The really obvious cases are for a new product and the reviewer says it has never failed on them, using the product for months now, etc.

Or you look at their rating history and find they only review specific products only one company produce. lol

Incorrect chief.

On Nintendo 64 chess the pieces would actually move and attack each other with an animation. You would see the horse charge down a peasant (pawn) for example...

It was quite fun.

Yes, you do see that a lot online, they're usually trying to phish. Amazon's service to me over the years has been golden, so I have no reason to accuse them of shameless self-promotion (beyond what may be reasonably expected out of any self-respecting business). On the few occasions that I was curious enough to check post history, they seemed too long-term and too individual for that.

But don't underestimate the power of fanboyism. Nobody ever thought there would be a plague of white earbuds until it was too late, and people do their best to prop up their Kindles where they are most visible. Some people will defend their stuff with as much verocity as an alcoholic would protect his stash of liquor.

May be, but it's restricted to the screen. And Chess Maniac 5 Billion & 1 used FMV.

i agree with you.  reading book material on a screen has never been satisfying for me.  i've tried ebooks on the ipod touch, and they just don't capture my attention.

A book is a book is a book. I thought, when I began my studies, reading all the scripts etc on my computer screen would be great and save me the hassle of printing them out. But it didn´t. It sux. Paper is paper, and ESPECIALLY books need to be printed on paper and not a tiny screen. So urite and fuck dem fanboys.lol.

This thread is so old that I can't remember if I was the one that put them there. Looks silly now.

I don't know if you guys know this or not, but you can have newspapers and blogs delivered to them. It's nice to have those instantly delivered. They're also ok for small books and magazines. I was an early adopter with kindle. If anyone should be a fanboi it should be me. However, I wouldn't do any serious big-book reading on my kindle. Personally, I like certain tangibles.

I might go and have a play with one again in a shop. It's either a kindle or a new pair of sunglasses
