I was looking at these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 26-265-063
I'm hoping to stay in the $30-ish price range, at either Newegg or Micro Center, and suggestions would be appreciated.

I think my mic on my headset died, does the steel series have a version with a mic attached to one ear piece?

meh. nothing will ever satisfy you. i have heard the creative fatal1ty headset in action, and i thought it was shit. then again, it was the USB version. but sound aside, they just didn't fit right and felt cheap. the mic was shitty as well.Uzique wrote:

I bought a Steelseries Siberia headset a while back after all the ranting and raving I hear about it... what's so special? The separately-attached microphone is a pain in the ass and I barely ever use it, and the actual sound-quality in the cans is average at best. I've gone back to using my 1/4"-jack Creative! Fatal1ty headset already, it's just easier and I see no clear noticeable/bragworthy advantage.
Sorry to go slightly off-topic-- but this "Just get the Siberia!" recommendation doesn't satisfy me, and I took that same advice.

sorry, that's not how it works. you missed a bunch. here are a few more to consider:Mutantbear wrote:
It's just a pair of headphones, if I forced anything less than Steelseries Siberias on to your head, god forbid, that you were stuck with for the rest of your life, you would be fine with them. Whatever you buy you will just find a better and cheaper pair tomorrow and then "Woops, I made a dumb choice." Have fun questioning your decision for a while
I made a checklist for you.
Do they fit on your head?
Does sound come out at audible frequencies?
Yet nothing will ever be good enough, I stand by my checklisthaffeysucks wrote:

I made a checklist for you.
Do they fit on your head?
Does sound come out at audible frequencies?
Do they make your ears itchy/sweaty/hot after a while?
Do they provide good enough directional sound?
Can they be abused and still withstand it?
Will you ever have to buy another pair again?
The separate microphone vs. the Creative's standard microphone is what makes it easier; they're both audio-jack headsets, both essentially the same thing except for the microphone. When I want to put on my headset for 15-20 minutes of TF2 or a quick MSN chat, I don't want to fumble around with some shitty low-quality microphone that's attached on a pathetic dangling wire. I don't 'get' why the Siberia are the worshipped mid-range headset - is it just pricing alone? Compared to the upper-end headsets they don't match up, and for a £20-30 price difference they don't really seem worth it over the standard Creative ones that I have.GC_PaNzerFIN wrote:
attach the mic on the cord and u don't even notice its there. I really didn't have to touch mine for a year.
also its VERY comfortable.
edit: explain how creative is EASIER to use?
How so? Explain. I'm 100% satisfied with my Siberias.Mutantbear wrote:

I hope you didn't think that was targeted to you personallyUzique wrote:
This isn't a case of "nothing being good enough for me"- I have nice headphones/earphones for music and film anyway. For gaming headsets I just don't see the widespread appeal in the Siberia's, they're just awkward.GC_PaNzerFIN wrote:

what? just pretend i didn't post anything about the mic quality being superb.Uzique wrote:

Perhaps it's just a practical thing.GC_PaNzerFIN wrote:

Now, I haven't tried many headphones, but this is how I see it; The sound isn't great, but they are very comfortable (for me, anyways) and have good "directional" sound, ie good for games.Uzique wrote:

I even used the velcro-monitor mounting thing so I didn't have to fuss around with the microphone everytime I wanted a quick chat... I was told that the sound-input quality and microphone clarity on the Siberias is amazing. Well, even with Windows settings / sound-card settings to max with Boost/dB Gain the microphone barely even picks up my voice from an ergonomic sitting position. I can be within 1 foot of my monitor and it gives me nothing. It just doesn't practically work for me, and it's a disappointment because I've used them literally twice.

Why would I choose to dangle a microphone loosely from a cord via a clip when I have, right next to me, a headset that already positions the mic in the standard mouth-position? Sound vs sound... no difference. Mic quality vs mic quality... no difference. Comfort and wearability don't bother me because I'm rarely talking for longer than 1-2 hrs. Creative > Siberia in this use.GC_PaNzerFIN wrote:
