For those critics who bill Microsoft's Windows Vista a commercial failure for failing to surpass Windows XP in sales, and inability to capitalize in the netbook market, perhaps they should reserve judgment a bit longer.  Just as Windows 7 hype is reaching full swing in preparation for a October release, the U.S. Army announced that like many large organizations, it will wait on upgrading to Windows 7.  However, unlike some, it is planning a major upgrade -- to Windows Vista.

The U.S. Army currently has 744,000 desktop computers, most of which run Windows XP.  Currently only 13 percent of the computers have upgraded to Windows Vista. It announced in a press release that it will be upgrading all of the remaining systems to Windows Vista by December 31st.

In addition to Windows Vista, the Army's version of Microsoft's Office will also be upgraded.

As with Windows, Microsoft is forgoing the upcoming new version -- Office 2010 -- in favor to an upgrade to Office 2007.  Currently about half of the Army's computers run Office 2003 and half run Office 2007.Army officials cite the need to bolster Internet security and standardize its information systems as key factors in selecting a Windows Vista upgrade.  Likewise, they believe that an upgrade to Office 2007 will bring better document security, and easier interfacing to other programs, despite the steeper learning curve associate with the program (which is partially due to the new interface, according to reviewers). The U.S. Army will perhaps be the largest deployment of Windows Vista in the U.S.
Di you think they are doin a right thing by upgrading to Vista or no? Do you think "wth are they thinking" considering that vista didnt do so good comparing to XP.... Also would it be more reasonable to wait for Windows 7 and get that instead of Windows Vista?

Damnit, this happened with Vietnam.

They didn't do their research. Microsoft has a history of 'answering' it's poor OSs. 7 is the answer to Vista, the fix to it. It would be more worthwhile to wait until shortly after the release of 7 to upgrade.

Having been a contractor for the U.S. army for four years, I can tell you that at they don't rush to be guinea pigs (which is a wise corporate policy also). Don't get me wrong they make their mistakes, but there is nothing stupid about this one. Do you really want your military being the first to pioneer the discovery of bugs and exploits?

On a slightly off topic note, how many times can they fucking upgrade Office? Like, really, how many things are there really left to do?

Office is the same as it was 10 years ago when I used it.

The narrow view of office makes one think "spread sheet", "word processor" etc. Office is more than the just four components you typically think of and is a platform for automation (document assembly) and development (i.e. Infopath messaging->forms->messaging). 2007 brought MOSS to maturity (dev platform using sharepoint)

Because upgrading to Vista was a mistake. Staying on XP was... free, and stable.

Sure you guys don't need "tech team" tattooed on your foreheads, and a secret handshake to be really cool? I think you're overplaying the value of your unsubstantiated endorsement a little.

See, it's funny, because I've used Vista for the past year and haven't had any significant problems.

That said, no significant problems means a handful of little annoyances. A handful of little annoyances over 3/4 million systems means a fuck ton of issues. Issuing such a major upgrade on the eve of the release of a new OS is a waste.

Nothing I said is fanboy hating on Vista. 7 is the fix to Vista because of the truck full of manure Vista went through. It's not miraculously saving anything, but it is an upgrade and has worked marvelously for many people throughout the beta/RC stages. I say upgrading to Vista is a mistake for the reason stated in this post.

Finally, chill out. I'm not going to listen to anyone because of a badge a mod felt like tagging them with one day. There are many people who do deserve it and don't have it, some that are the inverse, but it should be roughly ignored either way. Max, lightening up will commence when the vague reference of Vista in a bad light (not bad, actually; somewhat opaque in this case) doesn't prompt nerdrage.

Seems strange to upgrade to Vista now, when 7 isn't far round the corner.

What kind of attitude is that? You just insulted Defiance, and didn't even bother to adequately explain your motivation, and now you're complaining about people questioning your authority to do so?

You didn't help Defiance. You insulted him, only to complain in the following post about what you perceived as an insult.

What the fking personal vendetta you have against me, Mikkel?
If Defiance feels offended, he is free to Contact me via PM and we settle it there.

What gives YOU the right to come here and say tech teams contribution is overrated?

Vendetta? Sorry, GC_PaNzerFIN, but so far it seems like you're the one blowing steam here. I'd suggest you keep your temper in check, and substantiate your opinions instead of insulting people because they don't take your endorsement to be the gospel truth.

Not really. Vista has been though its paces, surprises uncovered, and now has service packs. No entity with thousands upon thousands of workstations is going to be a guinea pig for an OS when its first released. The need a true release version during their planning phase and this plan has probably been in the works well before windows 7 release date even came to light.

vista is gay. i'm sure once you've gotten used to handling the dozens of little quirks then it's a fine OS, but most users, especially those who are planning on gaming will just not be bothered.

A good OS needs to be a nice, natural progression from the last one. Vista was not. 7 feels like the real sucessor to XP.

Also please stop wagging your tech team dong around all over the place. You will get thanks and karma in the threads you helped in. You will not get any respect or reverance and personally I think you are about as useful as 5 minutes on google or the hardforums.

max is actually awesome though <3

That's your opinion. What if the previous OS completely sucked balls (not saying XP did)? The transition from 3.1 to 95 was pretty radical and not natural, did that make 95 suck?

yes it was a bad generalization. I will add for the sake of the terminally stupid that if the previous version sucked then yes overhaul it Point still stands, for most vista was a redundant upgrade.
