I know almost nothing about wireless, since I have never used it, just keep my comp on a hard line always. But my wife wants wireless for her laptop. Question is: Is this a good router?

thx in advance.

Does your wife's laptop have a wireless NIC, Nic?

Under Device Manager, her network adapters are:
Broadcom 802.11 b/g WLAN
and
Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC

I was actually just being silly (Read: "NIC" and "Nic"). It'd be pretty unusual to find a laptop without a wireless network card in this day and age.

Been on wireless for ~4 years maybe-Linksys has been the best I've used hands down.

To my knowledge Rosewill doesn't have much of a track record...I would avoid like the plague.

That Linksys model (WRT54G) is one of the best selling routers of all time. They just released a new version of it, too:

Plus Linksys is actually owned by Cisco who make badass networking equipment. I would get that WRT54Gv2 router that I linked to.

Yeah, in the same way that if Rolex bought a Chinese sweatshop making plastic watches with cartoon characters on them, they'd be a division of Rolex, too.

Yeah but rolex wouldn't put there name on the front of those cheap ass watches like cisco puts there name on the front of linksys routers.  True just because cisco owns them doesn't make them good, but they are arguably some of the best home routers available.  I don't know a single person with a good grasp on pc tech that owns anything else.

The entire home gateway market is junk. Linksys is neither the best nor the worst of the bunch, but it's all junk. Trying to insinuate that Linksys is special because "it's a division of Cisco" is inane.

No, I didn't. The only involvement Cisco have had with pretty much all of Linksys' product lineup is deciding where the "Cisco" sticker should be. The products are still made by Linksys in the same manner as they always have been. Cisco wanted a separate brand to peddle consumer junk through. If Cisco wanted to make their own home gateways, they wouldn't have had the need to buy Linksys.

the funniest thing is that almost right after i posted that response, my WRT54G flat out died.  thanks mikkel, maybe you were right.  you didn't have to smite my router though...

Heh, tough luck. It obviously sensed that I was calling it out.

Not true. Linksys do tend to be a decent choice because of the highly moddable Linux based firmware which gives a good degree of flexibility. Nothing to do with them being owned by Cisco.

This only goes for certain, limited Linksys models, but the point was that Linksys' parent company was mentioned as a reason to pick their products. In the context of the products manufactured by the parent company, Linksys equipment is junk. I have nothing against Linksys, and I've recommended their products before for home users. My argument was against playing the Cisco card, because it makes no sense.
