1 desktop PC in my play room, one desktop in my bedroom, one desktop in my summer house and hopefully one desktop in the workshop if it ever gets fixed + several laptops scattered around the house. What does that make me?

I guess, it's well within spec.

Then I am a faggot too.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I built a little amp for the test bench the other day.

https://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb8/Freezer7Pro/LITENFRSTRKARE1.jpg
(The box is from an old parallel port switch)

https://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb8/Freezer7Pro/LITENFRSTRKARE2.jpg

https://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb8/Freezer7Pro/LITENFRSTRKARE3.jpg

It's not massively powerful, boasting a whole 9WPC peak into 8Ohm before clipping, and only about 4 Watt per channel continuously, due to the massively undersized (~15VA) power supply. But it fulfills its purpose; a compact, good-enough, indestructible test amp. At least until the transformer goes up in smoke

That's not an Alps potentiometer is it? Why don't you shorten it a bit?

It actually is an Alps pot So is the power switch. Ripped them from an old Panasonic stereo (with some really odd choices in parts considering its price point).

I'd shorten it if it wasn't for the fact that the pot doesn't have a flat side at the bottom. I'd have to either cut a new one or mod the knob, which I really can't be arsed to do.

Nice and clean freezer, I like it

I found a used BMW handbrake on the interwebs, seriously tempted to buy it and build a racing sim cockpit...

Nice. Never get anything else than Alps I say. There's only one audio device I have that doesn't have their pot and on really low volume the sound is only heard in the left channel until I bump the volume up and then it works fine. I only use high impedance and low sensitivity cans with it as they require more power and so I can bump the volume.

Next project: A small linear variable power supply.

https://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb8/Freezer7Pro/HEMMABYGGE.jpg

It's based upon a really ultra-simple chip, which requires under 10 components to work. It does 2.5~20V at about 2-2.5A. It's mainly just a temporary rig until I can be arsed to design and build something a bit more powerful, as I don't have any other proper power supply for voltages under 12V. The cooler is from a G3 Mac

Nah. The last time I slept in the same room as my workshop was, like, half a year ago.

Anyhow, I just added the finishing touches to that thing I posted earlier.

I cleaned up just a little and added some sexy high-precision meters. It's ready for the field!

Guess I don't see the point.

Why not just take a normal ATX power supply and put a pot on it.

It doesn't quite work that way. And even if it would, any non-megabuck computer power supply will put out some really, really bad power in comparison to a linear power supply such as this.

No, that transformer is rated for 750VA (by the Chinese, but yeah), the chip I used can draw about 45W max.

Now I have somewhere to hand my cans. Fucked up a bit but I'll get it fixed once I make some plaster.

Only if you have a huge fluffy shaggy one.
Static electricity can happen with any carpet, well it can happen with many surfaces. It tends to happen in the winter when the air is a lot drier than the summer. As long as you keep your house at a higher humidity, say 60%, static electricity should not be a problem what ever your floor covering.
