Hello everyone! I'm going to be building a new computer that I will be taking to college in August. I just want you guys to check it out to see if there are any components that you oppose. I think everything is pretty nice for my budget ($800-$900). Please make any suggestions

I already have a 300gb Velociraptor and a 600W PSU, and I will be getting a sound card when I get my scholarship money.

Most people here will tell you to get a Freezer 7 pro for a cpu cooler. I like my 9700 though.

I found my self upgrading to a quad in 6 months, don't know if you'll end up the same way. Just keep that in mind.

Personally i don't think the E8500 is worth the money over the E8400 (my e8400 is sitting on 4Ghz nicely)
I'd go for a different CPU cooler (See Thermalright TRUE 120 or an OCZ Vendetta 2 if u don't want to spend as mush, im using the Vendetta 2 and its great)
That case look pretty decent, but I can recommend a Antec P182 for a similar price.
Also, after downloading a shit load of pron at college, you will want more than 300GB... but that can come down the track

I bought the quad 9400 for 180 bucks at microcenter... and i am ordering the arctic freezer pro 7... cheap and effective...
the stock intel heatsink and cooler is working fine suprisingly... but to run at 3.6 the freezer pro is needed...
http://www.microcenter.com/single_produ … id=0301968

and a gigabyte  ep45 UD3P and it OC's very easily... 3 buttons... 3.2 3.4 or 3.6 or stock 2.6ghz it was 135 bucks...
http://www.microcenter.com/single_produ … id=0301543

your build should be pretty rockin with what you have picked out... just giving you some other ideas...

Don't get that zalman. Its way overrated and priced. Either F7P or TRUE/Noctua NH-U12P depending what you can afford.

oh and yes save up few bucks and get E8400.

Asus P5Q pro is one of the most selling P45 boards and its nice.

What games are you going to play? You might want to think about getting quad very carefully as some newer games are starting to benefit a lot from quad.

- Drop to a E8400 or think about getting a quad. Some games do start to benefit from one
- You can get a higher performing GTX260 (216 shaders) for cheaper than the 4870. Less power, cooler and more quiet too
- this is cheaper
- Drop to the vanilla P5Q
- Something like the cooler master elite 330 is much cheaper and works just as well.
- Get a F7P for medium OCing or one of the other coolers recommended in the thread for heavy OCing or if you get a quad
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

If u stick with a 4870 i'd say go the P5Q Pro. leaves the option for CF (unless you aren't a fan of dual card)
If you go with the 260. You might as well go for the Vanilla
(I dunno about over there, but here I can get a 1Gb 4870 waaay cheaper than a 260 (216), dunno why)

Currently I have BF2, L4D. TF2. UT3, CoH, CoD4, Empire, Crysis (meh), but I do plan on getting new games when they come out.

Can you link me to the vanilla P5Q? I'm not entirely sure what it is.

Because of MIR and a combo deal, the pro turbo would be cheaper. Should i still switch?

Also, should i switch to a quad?

Then go for the pro. It does have another PCI-e slot and better northbridge cooling

if you can stretch your budget to a q9550 by all means get one. Just make sure to get a good cooler

I'm seeing what I can do, but do you have a suggestion for said cooler? preferably cheap because of budget issues.

I'm looking at this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6811112154
but i want to make sure the case can hold a 4870 and the massive cpu cooler.

are you absolutely sure this can fit a 4870 (maybe two in the future) and that cpu cooler?

Like i said above...
the q9400 is 180 bucks as opposed to the q9550 270 bucks
i know the 9550 has more cache... but i wonder if its worth the 90 dollars...
are you going to OC?   what are you using the comp for?

might even consider the i7 920... 230 bucks at microcenter... u would have to change moboard and ram though...
