I'm getting wierd issues with the old dears Windows Mail account. I keep getting the following message;

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'xxx xxx', Server: 'mail.btinternet.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I've followed all the guides I could find, I've changed the port numbers, made new email accounts, everything.

Does anyone have any ideas on what to try?

By Windows Mail, do you mean Outlook Express, Hotmail, or MSN?

Then I'd say it's most likely a firewall issue.

Try disabling any firewalls you have, and then hit the send/receive button again.

Its the Outlook Express updated program.

It's already set to POP3, as standard

I would go into your control panel, then mail accounts. Either delete the old mail account or wipe out the profile entirely and start over fresh.

If you have norton anti-virus disable it's email scanner and try again.

That was the article I found originally, but saw that it said the fix was to be applied to an Exchange server only, but then I noticed the link to the article I posted which is for this issue with POP3 accounts.

No worries.  Easy to miss.

This.

Maybe also try pinging port 110 on the mail server to check you can access it ok.

Both these worked.

Dunno why, dunno how, did the 'start over' thing before, twice, but it worked this time and you both get thank you karma
