I'll be working for a company that does finishing work: painting, papering, wall covering, plastering, skim coating, faux finishing, custom effects.

Any tips?

I generally like doing handy work, but I don't have much experience doing the above listed type work.

Don't be afraid to ask questions for anything.

It makes the guys you'll be working with know you are interested and are keen to do the job right the first time.

lift with you legs not with you back.......

I worked in construction couple of years ago and it was fun. I was allowed, or more like required, to drink on the job. And there is generally less stress and depression in the air, compared to an average office.

Make sure if you are self employed or if your working for a company that you have Indemnity insurance. In case you make any major fuckups. Over here you have to do a few course on health and safety and get your CW Card or you can't get onto big sites which could cut out a few opportunities. Don't know how it works over there.
I have a few mates who are painter decorators and they all have to smoke huge amounts of weed to get through the day. Its probably the most repetitive and monotonous job in the construction industry. So take up a weed habit or aim for a different path tbh.

If they ask you to go and buy a long weight or similar from a hardware store, ask the shop to make you a cup of tea whilst they get it for you.

When I was doing my apprenticeship for plumbing and working on big construction sites, the guys/gals who did the dry walling, painting, flooring, etc... where ALL big time stoners and so funny. Working on the same site as them was always a blast.
Also ask questions like mentioned above if you don't know what you are doing. I worked with one guy who just started and he ended up being my helper and ALL FUCKING WEEK he asked the dumbest questions over and over again! So don't do that because it gets really annoying.

One other thing. The carpenters are usually fucking assholes who think they know everything about every single fucking trade. They usually go around and try and tell everyone else how to do there job but yet they are the ones that fuck up the most.

These are just some of the experiences that I have had while working on major construction sites for 4+ years.

Worked in general contracting for a year or so before I realized I wanted to be on the design end of things, not so much the construction

1) Learn to love getting up early. Like 5am. Often times you have to be on site at 7am. Plus side, you're usually off by 3.

2) Pack snacks. Right around 10 you're bound to feel a crash. A couple of candy bars or something will get you through till lunch

3) Good Boots. From the looks of things, you don't do a lot of heavy steel work, so steel toe may not be required, its up to you. But ankle support and good support is a must. You'll probably be on your feet the most of 8 hours.

4) Get a wide brim hat and sunscreen for outside work. The sun will bounce off the walls right into your face. Burn city.

5) Very very important. ALWAYS wipe your feet before entering a house. You walk through some serious shit on a site

Enjpy it. At least you're outside. And you're making good money, right?
