ok, i'll give you the situation.

i'm going to be moving my xbox out of my office and into my living room.  the problem is that the rooms are at opposite ends of my apartment, and i don't really want to run a 200 foot long ethernet cable from my modem in the office to the living room.  i was thinking about getting the xbox wireless adapter, but most people say it's a waste with all the connection issues.  besides that, my wireless coverage isn't that great in my living room anyway, so gaming will be really painful.

while at radio shack the other day, i noticed they had some "ethernet over power" connectors for around a hundred bucks.  i've heard of this before, but don't really know too much about it.  the concept is that i plug two of these adapters into regular electrical outlets, one by the modem, and the other by the xbox.  it converts the outlet into a standard ethernet port, so i'm basically getting a wired connection over the existing electrical lines.  the set i saw advertised promised 85 megabits/sec, so that should be more than adequate for connection quality.

my real concern, however, is that my apartment building is pretty old, and none of the outlets are grounded.  this makes me wonder if i should attempt using these things, especially because i will need to use an adapter for the three prong to two prong (not sure what those are called).  the radio shack guy said it should work fine, but didn't really know shit about it, so he was obviously just looking for the sale.  does anyone have any experience or knowledge that can help me out here?  should i try a setup with a surge protector, and then the filter?  is that even possible?  halp!

sorry about the wall of text, but you guys are my only hope

With old cabling these adapters seem to be hit or miss. If they work they work great. You could buy a pair and if they don't work properly you could just return them again
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

Well it kinda addresses your issue, but we use the wireless adaptor and it works perfectly 2 floors and the other side of the house from our router.  I think the wireless adaptor is the easier (and probably cheaper) solution.  Plus cant you just return it if it doesnt work well?

i have a shitty wireless router which doesn't really provide a good signal in my living room.  i'm sure there is a lot of lead paint in my ancient apartment building

this, along with picking a slightly less costly option.  i got a pair of Panasonic HD-PLC adapters online for ~$40 and they work great.  since then i have expanded to three adapters and it's wonderful.  try to find a cheaper option in a B&M store.

We use this in our house. Works perfectly. I actually did a test, a direct ethernet cable from my computer to my router, and the method you described, and it turned out margionally slower (like 900kB/s download compared to 850 or something).

I say go for it.

that converter sounds pretty cool, wish I woulda known about that before I ran cable 100 feet along the outside of our house to another room, but meh was fun doin it. (Always fun drilling holes through your house.)
