Because the star is so small, its planetary system would be a miniature, scaled-down version of our own. For example, VB 10b, though considered a cold Jupiter, is located about as far from its star as Mercury is from the sun. Any rocky Earth-size planets that might happen to be in the neighborhood would lie even closer in.

The real news is how they found it.
A long-proposed tool for hunting planets has netted its first catch - a Jupiter-like planet orbiting one of the smallest stars known. The technique, called astrometry, was first attempted 50 years ago to search for planets outside our solar system, called exoplanets. It involves measuring the precise motions of a star on the sky as an unseen planet tugs the star back and forth. But the method requires very precise measurements over long periods of time, and until now, has failed to turn up any exoplanets.

I think it's great that more and more extrasolar planets are discovered, yet it's mostly around small stars. Here we won't be able to find any planets where life could exist. every planet close enough to the star to have decent temperatures would be synchronized in its rotation so that there can't be any life...

in other news the economy sucks, millions are without jobs, and millions die in africa for no reason.  but yes, this is what we need to spend time and money on.

dunno.  why?  one could argue they are trying to secure natural resources since oil is drying up in other places.

I believe that places such as Africa and the Iraq need maps so.... um, it's all about global warming.

on topic: I thought that they already measured the oscillation of stars to determine planets within a solar system? This must be the first time the technique was used from the ground observations with the eye, rather than satellite/computer analysis.

I believe this is the first time astrometry has ever found a planet. I know it has been used before to catalogue stars and track neo's.
