Ok, long story short, my wireless network is shit for some reason.

I used to have a 802.11g adapter, and it would work fine.

Then I got a new router cause the old one died, which has 802.11n. So, naturally, wanting to improve my wireless speeds, I got an n adapter. Here's where it gets problematic. The n adapter does not work nearly as well as my old g one. So, I just said "whatever" and used the g one. BUT now I am using 64 bit windows 7 (and same thing with 64 bit windows vista) and the g adapter has no 64 bit drivers I can find. The n adapter works, but I get drop outs in some games and get a fairly constant 1/2% loss in others.

Heres a rough floorplan of the area between me and the router. Before we go on:

1. Router cant really be moved.
2. Would like the least likely to fuck up solution ()

So, looking at that floorplan, should I be having wireless issues? The brick walls are probably a couple of bricks thick.

And finally, should I bother getting a new adapter that has proper 64 bit drivers (if so, could you recommend some)? or should I do something more permanent/involved like running an ethernet cable through the roof? (would prefer not to do that, obviously).

Bf2s, halp.

Have you tried a powerline adaptor?

They make wireless network extenders that plug into the wall sockets. You basically plug them into your router via CAT5 and they "learn" your frequency, etc. Then you disconnect the CAT 5 and take it to another room in your house where you need the signal boosted.

Maybe that would help. They're about $20-30 US.

a couple bricks thick is pretty hard to penetrate through, but if the g network worked fine before, there's no reason n shouldn't.  have you tried the adaptor with a laptop somewhere within clear visual range of the router?  like outside that glass window or whatever?

oh and powerline adaptors are awesome

I havent tried the laptop with adapter thing, but the fact that my g laptop gets good speeds in the same room/desk, as well as my iPhone, and my old g adapter is pretty telling my N adapter is terrible.

I havent tried a powerline adapter. Are they good/reliable enough for gaming? Are there some particular ones that are better than others?

have you tried putting the n router into a mixed mode?  wireless n technology allows for g adapters to connect to a n router.  we might be able to see if the problem is your adapter or router.

i use the Panasonic HD-PLC.  the speeds are something like 95% of the speed i get with a computer hooked up directly to the router.  i haven't used it for PC gaming, but i do run a CSS/FTP server off one adapter and play on the 360 off another, both of which are just fine.  i'm sure PC gaming should be just fine too.

The router is in mixed mode, as there are other people/computers with g wireless cards that need it.

The problem isnt the router, because my laptop, PS3 and iPhone all get signal in the same room as the adapter. Also, the adapter works fine in other rooms.

I will have a look at that Panasonic powerline adapter.
