Computer going on stanby

My sisters computer will boot up, you'll see the bios info, then windows loading screen, then Avast scanning program.

Anyways, just after avast whether you skip it or not the screen will shut off and go on standby. I have no idea what it could be.

She had avast for the longest time, so I doubt its that.

What could it be?

Once you get into safe mode, see what the event viewer says. I'd bet it's the AV software causing that.

When I select safe mode, it will just have a flashing underscore at the top left. I've waiting a couple minutes but it stayed there. How long should I typically wait?

Here dude, try this. Take the hard drive out of that machine and hook it up as a slave on another. Run ChkDsk d: /f (assuming d: is your mischievous hd)

I would, but I don't have ide on this machine. And I have no other machines to test it on

It was off since yesterday night, and it still does it today. And it wouldn't always fuck at the same place if it was heat related.

And it never goes into windows.

try logging on as the administrator when it gets to the password screen. if it still happens, it could be a hardware or low level error. if it doesn't happen, its just a windows issue and can probably be fixed easily.

when u get to the welcome screen, hit ctl+alt+del twice, and use administrator for the user name... blank pass is default unless u set it.

I get the loading windows bar, then goes on standby.

If I don't find a way to fix it, I'll have to reformat. Not that I want to..

Put in ya Windows CD.
Press any key to boot from CD. Do this.
When the option shows, Type R for Repair <enter>
Select OS to Repair.
Type fixboot <enter>
Type fixmbr <enter>

Reboot.

Update!

My sister said that the screen goes black but it's does go into windows.
I say this because it logs on msn after the 'black' screen.

Now I'm stumped, something with the video card?

Do you have on board video or another video card you could swap out to test with? (If it's a laptop, yer screwdz0red)

I have a feeling the resolution got out of whack and the monitor can't display it.

Also, if it is a laptop, try hitting Control F5 (or whatever your's is) to swap between onboard or external video.

It won't boot into safe mode?
