I think that it won't make a difference, people are going to promote websites as much as they can, and anyone with a website will be prepared to do it, so it's just a case of who promotes the most.

I am already on the first page in the first few listings in several search terms, so I feel threatened by this new feature.

The feature only applies to the user using it. IF and only IF thousands of people promote it, then it will go up maybe a few rankings, but that is rare. If your promote something yourself, it only means you will see it promoted at the top of the page. I am pretty sure Google took into account the abuse part and made sure it can't be abused easily. I wouldn't worry about it. I only do it a few times to make sure that some of my regular google searches are easy to access.

Oh dear me. The whole point of the "promote site" thing was to allow users to find the sites THEY want to see at the top more easily. Nothing more. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with the page rankings. I don't believe it's even taken into account. It's an addition to the accessibility of Google, nothing more. It doesn't change how their search engine works and how it monitors submissions of new sites and the page ranking. What the hell does YouTube have to do with anything? That's a user based submission application, it's nothing like Google.
