- A commander's wish list
Some good and great ideas here for sure.
Some of the suggestions and comments are a bit narrow for my liking. Squad configurations theory is a fun subject but maybe applies to groups of people who play together every weekend or something.
So here goes in no particular order...
Mission Configuration: Nobody is locked as to what kit they have - given the right circumstances ANY squad should be ready to re-kit and do ANY other mission even if only temporary. Be ready to rotate Squad Leaders to accomplish your missions. More Here
Pilot Squads: Since few games have only one set of pilots the whole game saying a pilot should or shouldn't be squad leader misses very important capabilities. A couple of jet pilots should for and lock a squad so they can receive attack orders from the commander AND they can tell the commander where the next air strike will be and have UAV up to assist in targeting. Pilots should avoid command. As far as I know no military in the world has a flying pilot commanding ground troops in combat. There is a very good reason for that. More Here
VoIP in Command: Besides the mind of the player, the command mode map graphics maybe the most important tool in the BF2 inventory, next is VoIP and finally text tasking. Typing gets ignored more than the other modes. If all else is equal between two commanders, the Commander using VoIP will be more effective while being more efficient than the other who doesn't have VoIP. VoIP/nonVoIP doesn't equal good/bad it just gives a competitive edge.
BF2 Command Hours: lol you better consider life experience before you get up in someone's face, mates.
Squad Orders: Squad Leaders need to use the mission map graphics more so the commander can interpret their actions without VoIp and typing back and forth.
Tools of the Trade: Get into a non-ranked server look thru every tool available, become efficient with them.
Squad and Command Operational Imperatives: Anticipate - Coordinate - Verify. Use the tools, all of them if needed, to fully complete missions. More Here

Ops, my comments about flying squad leaders was directed more so at squads that are a mix of pilots and grunts. If everyone in the squad is flying then no, it's not a big deal, i.e. the blackhawk squad in mastuur city. They were directed at those who fly jets and don't help the rest of squad with orders and other requests for support from the commander. I don't mind an all flying squad as commander or as a grunt. I do mind flying squad leaders when you can't get help or sqawn away from close quarters combat so you don't die as soon as you spawn.
Turtle, you are correct I agree whole-heartedly about not mixing air/ground in the same squad. Very problematic. I want that professional pilot as an SL so I can aim him easier and not have to relay thru his SL - and if he is a lone wolf it really sux.DSRTurtle wrote:
