Sucks to be as dumb as her.

The British government are trying to get the ISP's here to become 'Internet Police', they're pretty hesitant though because it involves a fuckload of effort and investment. Don't blame them, especially on an ideological level; letting the corporate-sponsored government interests pry into everything you do with a service that you pay for is a major invasion of rights. Some of the ludicrous assertions they make about 'Cyber policing helping to stop terrorism' etc. are just, quite frankly, hilarious. It's like the "Piracy is funding COMMUNISM!" posters that float around
What did she do that makes her 'dumb'?
Err... got caught? 5yrs of music piracy for me, with no scares except for an 'Excessive bandwidth consumption' formal-letter from my ISP... probably had about 2,500 albums / 50,000 songs before my hard-drive crashed and I (forcibly) stopped. She downloads 24 and gets caught? That's the definition of fucking dumb incompetence.
Because being picked to have an example made of yourself is totally out of the question? What are you actually suggesting she did? Whilst it sounds good in theory, what possible factors contributed to her getting 'caught'?

That's why I always buy my stuff.
By really not understanding how controls and how the zeros & ones are working on the Net, I play it safe.
Had too much stuff IRL that happened to me, it had became a defense mechanism.
I'm not sure how to express "Dans le doute, abstiens toi!"  When in doubt, don't do!?!

It's a debate that will take a long time to settle and lawyers are seeing $$$.
Corporations and authors sees $$$ go away.
They will try for sure to bring people in example in front of the public.
But they already know, hoping they are intelligent enough, that their way of operating are to change.
Of course they don't want to change, the least resistance course principle.
Through $$$ to lawyers and you have the law on your side!
It's easier than changing your way of being.

Because you fear of being fined almost $2 million for downloading 24 songs?

Agreed, it is the right thing to do to buy music. But look at it this way: You steal a CD from a store (which has what? 12 songs on it?), that's $12 assuming you can buy the album online at $1 per track. Stores typically sell CDs for $15-$20, right? You get busted for shop lifting, you get a slap on the wrist, maybe a few thousand in fines, and that's it. Doesn't even really matter the cost of what you steal. You could walk out with an 80" LCD TV and you'll get the same treatment.

But this woman takes in essence a compilation CD (those have more tracks, amirite?) and gets slapped with a $2 million fine. For essentially shoplifting? I am not excusing her breaking of the law, but the penalty doesn't fit the crime at all. Hopefully her lawyers will figure this out.

But to Jean, it would be cheaper to change their business model. Lawyers cost a fuck load of money. Digital enterprises have very low overhead costs. Wouldn't take much to change. Apple and Amazon and numerous others already have the outlet to sell stuff. They just need to start shifting in that direction more and accepting that piracy is a fact of life. If you want to combat piracy, combat it off the coast of Somalia where people are actually dying because of it.

I think that artists should make money from radio stations and concerts as apposed to loyalties from CD sales. Most artists I've enjoyed listening too that have toured where I live I have paid to go and see. I've also bought albums of artists that I've given as gifts to other people.

People downloading music isn't what ruins the industry, it's industry and greedy artists/labels that are destroying the music.

This.

I think they just pick out one random person every year or two and sue 'em, just to attempt to scare the other piraters.

What website did she use? Obviously not a very good one considering she paid 99c for each song yet was still caught by the police and rapped for illegal downloading.

It always wonders me how people get caught with this shit, I'm guessing most of the time it's because they use stupid websites that make it so easy for the authorities to crack down should they be bothered

Such a waste of money to employ people to do this, I mean who actually fucking cares? Artists who aren't on such a high pay check? Well bad fucking like, learn to do live performances for money.

I think it's disgusting that music has become about the money and not about music - ridiculous.
Say your job is making picture frames.

Would you be saying that you don't shoplifters stealing your frames because you are supporting the arts?

Theft is theft.

No, that cannot compare, because you are actually stealing something concrete, something that has been produced.

Downloading a bunch of 1s and 0s is different, a kind of grey-area. The production costs of that data file is zero (Don't get me wrong, producing music costs money, but producing that actual digital file costs nothing).

The closest you can get with that picture frame analogy is if someone purchased a frame from you, copied it perfectly, wrote your name on it and gave it away to people for free.

I'm not defending piracy, just pointing out that your analogy doesn't really work.
