I managed to blag myself a creative fatalty sound card for £50 (litterally half price).

I believe, my motherboard tray, has bent, with the weight of my coolermaster V8, because, I just cant seem to fit the card into the PCI x1 slot.  If I fit it onto the bracket and screw it in, the X-FI light wont come on, and if I push it in properly, the light comes on but bends out of the bracket (so I have this space in the rear of the case).

I dont want to ruin my case, it cost me a bomb, but its really getting on my nerves now.  I have no sound because of it and was wondering if anyone had any tips bar smashing it with a hammer............

I think the card it's self might be screwed anyway.

I disabled the onboard sound, and downloaded latest drivers, device shows as working but nothing is coming out the speakers.

I have this on my ASUS P5Q, am thinking I must of forgot to do something but I've checked off a fairly exhaustive list as it is

any help would be good

Why'd you buy a V8? Anything that size was clearly going to cause problems.

What case do you have? Pics of it so I can get better idea how exactly the xfi is not going in there?

I have had few cards that just didn't go down the back properly to screw it in place, the retention bracket of the card was often slightly twisted, so I bent it back the way it was ment to and went to slot properly.

edit: that part often gets bent jsut enough for the card to not go in the slot.

I really doubt your mobo tray has twisted. There just isn't that heavy coolers out, not even the over 1kg copper true will twist mobo tray of decent quality.

I'm guessing this is the case.  I've had a few cards I've had to either bend or in the case of my audigy 2 I had to remove one of the screws for the back plate to allow it to mount in the case and be fully in the motherboard.  It's just lack of every piece being manufactured to good enough tolerances to always be a perfect fit.

This wreaks of Antec 900.

I've had the exact same problem with the two expansion cards I have. Both my tv tuner and Xonar DX wouldn't fit in normally so I had to bend the "retention bracket" (working off panzers pic) to get it to fit. It didn't damage the cards and so long as you don't look at it from behind you won't notice a problem.

But it is pretty piss poor for a case to not line up properly.

I had the same problem initially building this rig. I eventually bent the back panel of my case towards the mobo very slightly.

Onboard sound + decent DAC via digital coax > ANY soundcard
