so i have some files like 5 gb in size that i wanna get from my computer to my laptop but i only have a flash drive 4gb in size.

aside from doing half and half again using rar files how would i be best to get them over at harddrive-writing speeds. which leaves the idea of networking the two out because i dont wanna be limited to like 1 meg per second

ideas quick

Stick ethernet cable into eth port on lappy, and other end into computer eth port.

On your host computer, transfer files to "Public" (assuming Vista).

On leech computer, go Start > Network (Again, assuming Vista)

Find your host computer (May have to sign in as user with password)

Navigate to Public

Drag and drop onto Desktop (or wherever you want really)

If your computer is on a network, you can just plug an ethernet cable from laptop to router and do the same thing.

Tonnes of ways to do this lol.

ps this won't work (computer to computer) unless you have the right type of ethernet cable

you'll need a router otherwise

The 90's called. They want their Ethernet card back.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

He's correct, you need a crossover cable for computer to computer stuff.

If you know someone with a switch then:

0. Disable Windows Firewall and any other firewalls you have running as well as any antivirus products that monitor network traffic. Don't forget to re-enable afterwards.
1. Connect both computers to the switch via ethernet cable
2. assign each computer static IP's on the same IP address range and subnet (example: 192.168.0.10 and 192.168.0.12, subnet mask 255.255.255.0)
3. From the source computer do a Start / Run. Type in "\\192.168.0.12\C$" (or whatever IP you gave your destination computer) and click "OK"
4. When prompted enter in an administrator username and password from the destination computer.
5. Browse to the location you want to copy files to and begin.

If you can get your hands on a router then it's a bit easier:

0. Disable Windows Firewall and any other firewalls you have running as well as any antivirus products that monitor network traffic. Don't forget to re-enable afterwards.
1. Connect both computers to the router via ethernet cable
2. On each computer do a start / run and type in "cmd" and clikc "OK"
3. In the black box that comes up type in "ipconfig"
4. Take note of the line that reads "IP Address" and write it down for each computer.
5. Type "exit" in the black box.
6. Follow steps 3-5 in the above list for a switch.

Another way is to plug them both into an ethernet router.
Set whatever folder your files are in as 'shared'.
Enable sharing on both machines.
Your laptop should be able to see the shared folder, copy and paste to your laptop.

Or something like the above, I forget the detail.

If both computers are relatively new, you can just use a network cable without a hub. Modern Ethernet adapters will cross over on their own.
You don't need a patch cable. I connect my laptop to the second Ethernet port on my server with a standard network led.

As of '99 you typically don't. Auto switching FTW.

Oh really? Whenever I've had to Ghost a single computer we always use a crossover cable. Why do people still make them then?

Legacy support?

If you don't have gigabit ethernet it won't work.

If you use patch bays you need them. Only if you have a wired network with wall plugs........... usually,

You sure?

I can't recall ever having to use crossover cables for that.

Sorry, my mistake, Its 5 years ago now. But I used to install networks in offices. When you had a wall socket fitting you plugged your cable into, you needed patch bays to reverse the wiring back over then can use normal Ethernet cables, if I remember right. If you don't use a patch bay and run cables straight from the switch you need a crossover cable to connect to the PC. Am I right? Memory isn't too good. I have tried to put the nightmare that was that profession behind me.
