I see where are not going to be on the same page but to answer to your original question again as to why thye bought it- Because its a well known site and not much or none of advertising will be needed. You can be sure they know that and thats one of the main reasons they bought it.

Think about it. Why do people go to TPB in the first place? To get shit for free. If they wanted to pay for it they wouldn't be on TPB.

As I already pointed out its not about free stuff but the fact the site is well known by users and by those who have never been on the site but did heard about it-those are the new potential customers. Also your statement is not based on anything as I don't recall a site to be in the same situation and the users stopped using it because it no longer offered free service (there might be still something free there btw). So to summon- its not necessarily for current users to continue using the site's services but to lour new members that are familiarized with the site and want to try it out.

Which essentially leads to a fuckload less traffic, making it worth nothing.

Again you are basing this on what? Do you know exactly how many people will left the site and how many will stay and how many new users will join the site?

Private trackers and rapidshare.

I always found that the worst feature of TPB was the search. TPB almost always had what i was looking for but the search function never returned the results.

Thus i moved on.
