ok, i have a Belkin N1 Cable router. this is my router

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-F5D8231u … amp;sr=1-1

Now i used to get a very good signal range with roughly around 20m's. But over the few days my router has only been transmitting the signal only 1 metre. if i move my laptop/ipod touch/PSP over 1 metre away from the router it disconnects. There is NO ISSUE with my internet as i get top speed on my desktop (20MB)

i have tried to disconnect and reset both router and modem but no luck.

help me!!!

It's a Belkin. Chances are that it has simply broken.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

For a tech-section resident, you actually hardly ever help anyone, to be honest.

Do you only consider those that buy the finest of the market's hardware worthy of your expert 16 year old advice?

Just shut it down and let it coooool for a good few hours. In my not-so-expert-opinion most routers stay on for too long and start having weird problems.

His problem is that he doesn't know the first thing about networking, and a few embarrassing episodes have made him timid.

Must you always be a jerk? Why are you in the tech section again?

Reading, for my own information and enjoyment. I don't profess to be, or seek to be, a tech-section contributer and helper. Freezer basically never leaves this section, but his general responses to people's questions seems to be sniggering and general tech-elitism. I'm pretty sure that's not the idea of posting tech-help and troubleshooting-questions here...

So instead of joining in on his asshattery, why not just report it or talk to a mod so we can discuss it with him privately? Derailing a thread isn't much better imo.

You know, we aren't really all that different.

Most wireless routers have a broadcast strength control option, so you can limit the range.  Make sure that hasn't been turned all the way down.

Also, if you've recently added or changed any wireless appliances in your home, such as a new cordless phone, cell phone, or wireless speakers for a home theater system, try disconnecting them to see if the problem changes.

It doesn't sound like the router is shot, Belkin or not, so for the sake of suggestion: Try changing the wireless channel. Due to the nature of wireless, having more then 1 router in an area causes problems. Thus, there are 11 channels to put each router on a slightly different frequency. What you need to do is get to the routers configuration which it sounds like you haven't done before. Easiest thing to do would be to look it up in the manual. I took the liberty of doing this for you.

Step 1: Open up IE/Firefox and go to "192.168.2.1" as if it were a website.
Step 2: Find the "Wireless" tab.
Step 3: (This manual isn't very good) I think you have to find the "Channel and SSID" tab.
Step 4: You should see a drop down menu to select a channel.

The channels you should try are 1 (which it may be set to), 6 and 11. 6 or 11, if the channel is the issue, ought to solve your problem.

Step 5: Select "Apply Changes"

The manual says the change is immediate, so your laptop may lose connection. In which case, just rescan and reconnect to it as you would normally. It should self configure itself to the new channel, but if not, you'll have to manually configure that in the wireless settings.

I'm not familiar with the router that you have, so I've never seen the interface.  I would refer to the manual for seeing if changing the signal strength is an option.  I've just noticed that it is an option within the wireless routers with which I've worked.
