ok, i currently have a gainward 4850 512mb and now need something with more muscle, as my brother is going uni and doing a degree in games designing and im starting a HNC in engineering and need something for solid works/auto cad.

ok im going to buy from ebuyer and my budget is £210, no preference over Nvidia or Ati, just the best card for the price. have had a look and the gtx 275, 4890, 4850x2 2GB etc. all fall into my budget.

also would the newer cards be a issue for a PCI-E 1.1 bus???

also my PSU is 620W

as mentioned will be used for autocad, solid works, adobe cs4 pack, lightwave, maya etc. and gaming.

so for £210, whats the best card i can get???

GTX 275 + cooler might be best package for you

Yes, but there's no point to buying a quadro. Stupidly expensive and, iirc, it's largely a difference in firmware.

For an entry level Auto-CAD college student, a Geforce card will do.

It just seems to me that if he is really getting this for productivity, he should get a workstation card. Now if this is really just an excuse to upgrade the gaming card (which I would back wholeheartedly) then a consumer graphics card will do just fine.

Workstation cards do terribly in games, whereas a gaming card will work fine in both. That, and a proper workstation card is far less bang/buck then today's gaming cards.

He definitely shouldn't get a workstation card. Once upon a time there was a point to them. Now they are just pointless.

GTX 275 sounds good.

im still not sure on the 4890 or 275

the 275 is better according to reviews, but when overclocked the 4890 can be better than the gtx 285. also it has 1GB ram.

im stuck!!!

oh yes, ram is an issue. all my 4GB gets hogged up. im getting 8GB soon as i defo need it.

my brother wants the 275 as he has struggled with ati drivers, espcially with cs4. i know there is a new plugin but he hates the drivers. i may go with the 275 on that basis. but for gaming i want a 1GB ram card.

btw, for £225 i can get a GTX285

Do you game at 2560x2048 or something because 896MB Vram is enough for 1920x1200 with AA

lol, atm 1280 x 1024 (17" screen) BUT me and my bro will be doing 50/50 on a 24" HDTV soon so we can hook up our PC and xbox to it

Well I don't think the additional vram makes much of difference anyways (its like 100MB diff lol) but if you can afford the GTX 285, I do recommend it.

275 it seems then. i will overclock it, but its hot in the UK and my idle temps are 40-45'. i need a better cooler aswell

Ummm 40-45 C idle temps are not bad at all, you have plenty of headroom to OC. Of course, you should get an aftermarket cooler, especially for a quad core.
