i have a chance to spend three nights - two days, and we already have scheduled a stop @ Mt. Rushmore.
Can anyone tell me about Deadwood (besides SEREMAKER, he'll post sumthin' from the series i'm sure) ?
Are there any 'must see' stops, something i can waste gb's of pictures on?

I was just there.  We stayed at Badlands.  Anyway, I just wanted to say, Mt. Rushmore sucks balls.  You see 4 tiny heads, the place is over crowded, parking is $10, you spend less then 10 minutes there, all you do is walk, and get bored.  It was honestly crap.

thanks for the heads up (sorry) means more time in the bar. My sister-in-law was asking if it was a saloon or bar in Deadwood, and i said all the same to me . . .

thanks Mac, i leave a week from today. In this state, like Missouri and California, we celebrate July 24th.
Utah because the 'Mormons' discovered it, Missouri because the 'Mormons' left, and California because the 'Mormons' didn't make it that far.

I've been to South Dakota, actually, but never went to Deadwood. We stayed for the most part in the counties just below it. There's actually a shit-ton you could see in the Black Hills, though. Custer State Park, Wind Cave National Park, Badlands National Park, Crazy Horse Memorial, Wall Drug... You should probably check out their tourism website, anyway: http://www.travelsd.com/

EDIT: Also, in Hill City, there is an awesome restaurant called the Alpine Inn. I recall we had to make reservations because it was so busy all the time, so look into that if you plan on going.

Funny you should ask, I'm currently in Rapid City, a tent to be specific. I will report back with suggestions once I've seen things tomorrow.

Ok just saw Rushmore and Badlands, both were incredable.  I say if you're in the area go see both.
Rushmore: Make sure you walk the trail to get close the the faces
Badlands: Take 240 all the way through the park and if you want  to see wild life then go the south rim road.

Oh yeah, someone obviously didn't take the trail and see the museum.  Honestly learn more about the features of a place before bashing

Lol?  Ok, so you took some random ass trail through some crappy woods to see the faces from closer up?  I had much more fun climbing whatever on trails in Badlands.  I don't get the deal about Mt. Rushmore anyway, who fucking cares.

Have you ever tried to sculpt something?  I mean, I think old Roman and Renaissance-era statues like the Venus di Milo and David are amazing feats of human accomplishment, simply because of the detail that was put into stone carved with hand-tools.  It's hard enough to whittle wood into something impressive, let alone a whole damn cliff face of the magnitude of Rushmore.

Maybe you don't appreciate the literal decades of toil that went into making it?

the only place I've been to in SD is sturgis for bike week - harley davidson was giving away a harley and with it was a set of custom designed saddlebags - my leather shop created that set and harley flew me and my craftsman up there and trucked us in - it was minus we're there only a day

I need to get up to Deadwood but I know if I'm in that area I'm going back to Cody, WY - I love WY

If you are talking about doing that on the drive then if you like breaking the rules that are posted everywhere and being bit by a rattlesnake, go ahead.  The trails that you can do are cool though.

i gotta agree with Npug, although i didn't see any;

my nephew, however, heard a rattlesnake at the next turn-off. he was climbing stairs down to the overlook.

we were too early for the bike rally, but did see some of Sturgis;

(notice the hookers were early too)

Later that afternoon we were in Deadwood;

Thanks everyone for input, and if you have a chance go. i was so pissed of at myself for stowing my camera in the overhead on the flite home. we left Rapid City and went southwest, right over Mt. Rushmore. i coulda got a picture from like 2000' up . . .

Isn't it cool how we take the American Indians land, put them on reservations and then carve faces into the cliffs of land that is sacred to them?
