I kinda expected MORE from this place, with the computer enthusiats around here... Yeah you can built it at Dell.com but you pay allot more for allot less, That is one of the main reasons computer focused people BUILD machines.
you dont pay more for less, you pay for a warranty... and if you are using this as a server, you WILL need a warranty.  trust me, dell is a good choice.

i'm pretty sure you can get a standard three year on a server, but pay more for up to 8 years... dell's rma process is great too.  they send you the part, you replace it, and send the broken one back.  or you can even have a tech come to your house.  it's much better than the places that make you send them the broken part first, while you wait for weeks and weeks with no system.

i have that for a 9550 quad and its fine...?

I have had a look at the Dell servers, but im not convinced... Its not worth the extra £100 - £200 for the equilivant with the only bonus of a warranty..

You can get A LOT out of the X4 920 with proper cooler and little OC. I guess if you don't OC it could jsut manage... but why not use the stock then?

Oh and I think the freezer xtreme is only bit more expensive, liquidator has it and it raps f7p in cooling performance..

Like you I run VM's (VMware 6 Desktop) and Sql Server (2008 standard x64 with SSAS and SSIS), but on a Vista x64 box

I went with that processor to keep my cost down (not for the proc itself, but all the other stuff like mobo, memory), but it has plenty of juice with much to spare. I can run a VM with 1GB dedicated to it and still play Fallout 3 @1920x1200 with a great frame rate.

This is what else went with (sorry Newegg.com links but you can see the parts)
motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6813131375
memory (this was a mistake for the board i have) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820231166

I chose not to overclock because I prefer a more stable and reliable system, since its tied to income. Quiet frankly I did not need to.

I run a Zalman coooler, does a great job turned all the way down.
