Anybody been to Egypt on an independent (i.e., non-package) holiday? Any tips? Any dangers/hassles/annoyances/things to be avoided? Cheap or dear? Thinking of booking. Probable Cairo to Sudanese border via Luxor/Karnak/Abydos and offshoot to Red Sea.
Argh. My school was planning for the grade 12s to go this year... turns out that they dont like us much so its for next years
noice

I've got a good friend who's visited relatives in Egypt. You'll enjoy it for the sight seeing, but try to avoid the poorer suburbs if you can - feral cats are everywhere and the hygiene is poor, unfortunately.

My GF went a few years ago and even though her head's up her arse she has said how she was constantly cracked onto even more so as she is blonde. I dunno if you have a Mrs but if she is going with you watch out for that. If it was me that had taken her I would of been up at least 3 camels by now. You needn't worry the RSPCA by that last comment, it isnt how it looks here.

1. Take the Yellow Cairo Cab since they have taximeter. Never the black and white since they can fool one with the price.
2. Always negotiate prices when buying stuff/services, I kid you not when I say you can get prices down to 10%.
4. I will not recommend cheap hotels.
Places to visit?
The Pyramids of Giza.
The Cairo Tower.
Khan el-Khalili for sure and Al Hussein Square, will be awsm to see in ramadan
The Citadel of Salah Ed-Din
I don't know about you, but I recommend visiting suez canal.
There are alot of stuff... but thats what I can think of right now..
edit: Cairo Museum...how can I forget that.

Everyone will be expecting tip. Like literally everyone.
Ask direction, they expect to be tipped. etc.

Whatever you do. DO NOT i repeat DO NOT get a taxi. The bloke damn near killed us driving at 100MPH+ down streets with no lighting, only when we got out did we realise the wheels were worn so badly the metal was coming out of the rubber...
That's the whole reason you go on holiday to these places, to have near death experiences and fun!hawaythelads wrote:

Maybe you can stone some women while you are there. You know, just to blend in.
Funny you ask mate because i went about 3 weeks ago. I went to hungada , stayed at some hotel, forgot the name. It was a three star though but still very good. Hungada is a fishing village so if your into sea food, you'll want to check it out as everything is very fresh. um...always negotiate the price, what ever you do !! If your getting a taxi, then get the yellow ones and agree to a price before you get in. I'm not gone lie, THEY CAN'T DRIVE FOR SHIT . If he is still happy by the time you buy something or by the time you use the service, you haven't negotiated enough.
They are ruthless bastards so beware they will say anything just to get a sale. While I was there, I also went to Cairo. Was a 5 hour trip by minibus but the time went quick. Went to see Pyramids, Khan el-Khalili ,the Citadel of Salah Ed-Din and of course Cairo Museum. Also went for a Nile cruise. I personally enjoyed the mosque and pyramids, didn't really think the museum was all that. The Khan el-Khalili bazaar is really fuking big in a really small space so your sure to get lost there! um...we had someone who could speak Arabic, this helped a LOT.
I also did a bit of quad biking in the desert and scuba diving, was orite.

Below is a picture of a meal that cost like 6 quid. Food is pretty cheap depending on where you go, they have KFC, MC'ds and a few other.

And that's all i can remember at the moment! One last thing, how many cats can you see in the following pic:

there were at least 10 when i took the pic.

Just watch that you don't get pick-pocketed and remember that any tour you take will always strangely take you to or near the tour guide's brother's shop.
Also, eat the yoghurt. Best way to get yourself accustomed to the food. Something to do with bacteria.
Haven't been to Egypt myself, closest I've come is Turkey but my folks have and these are their tips. Then again that was in the early 1980s so no doubt things have changed.
