Basically to cut a long story short, those bikes are cheap shit. Are you actually doing any mountain biking, or you just want a bike? In any case, for that little money you're not going to get anything great, but you will get a much better bike if you get one with no suspension at all, and V-brakes rather than discs. Manufacturers stick both on to make a bike seem more appealing, but they work terribly and increase the cost of the bike so they further skimp on the other parts.

If you can stretch to 180, this would be a much better buy. This is 185, it comes with suspension but it would be an ok bike. You also might like the look of it more. Giant are such a huge company that they can afford to get their bikes down a bit cheaper, so it'd be much better than say an Apollo for the same money. When you spend a bit more money, Apollo can make some ok bikes, but I'd always recommend going for an established brand over them.

This.

I'm told Trek are pretty decent for cheapish stuff too - also because they're humungous.

The guy has a budget of 150 quid, and you're saying don't bother and spend 180 instead. How fucking shit is the Bike industry if you can't get anything decent for 150 quid

I'm sure you can, and you're just being all elitist, just like those faggots in the tech section

I mean no offence, but people like that, they think they know everything but if you can't work on budget and if you don't know where limits are, you ain't worth shit to be honest, you ain't worth shit on here or in real life.

Nope. He's talking good sense. Especially the stuff about avoiding disc brakes and suspension on cheaper bikes.

Trust me dude, you cannot buy a bike that will last you more than a year for that kind of money. In fact, most of the e-stores I searched didn't even have bikes for under 200 quid. Bikes simply cost money, should I accuse you of being elitist if you couldn't find me a brand new car for under a grand?

Believe me, I ride a lot of bikes, I'm a mountain biker, I know where you can and can't save money.

EDIT: Also worth noting he said he could spend a bit more if he needed. And anyway, what's 30 quid? That's not even a good night out.

Yeah, Trek, Giant, Specialized are all great for cheap bikes because they're giant - excuse the pun - companies. I just couldn't find any Treks or Spesh's for that money when I looked.

Yeah, I just wasn't sure if by parks he meant dirt tracks and stuff, ie not-suitable-for-a-road-bike territory. In any case, mountain bikes tend to be pretty good all rounders.

I don't particularly want to order a bike online as I personally want to see the size of the bike before I buy it.  So I ideally want to go to halfords and see the bike before I buy it.

The V brake thing makes total sense so will try to get a bike for that amount.

I was looking at these bikes( 1 & 2 ) which are £230 and thats when you begin to get V brakes on the bikes. And the make is Carrera. Anyone know if they are decent and would last a decent amount of time.

Also this is my first bike in agessss, so I might just get one of the ones I posted, the cheap ones that aren't meant to last long. And if I actually cycle a lot then I would get a decent one, but if I end up using it once in a blue moon then no point.

For just a general bike, Carreras aint bad. Fairly light, tough enough for what you'll be doing too.

Remember you could always just go down to your local halfords and check out the bikes, then order it online when you've seen it. You'll save yourself a bit of money.
