Honestly, I have never played WoW before and have no interest to either. But give me a break, your talking about how mediocre one of the most POPULAR games ever is. Sorry, but but games are there for people to enjoy, and more people enjoy this game then just about any other so it is obviously doing something right.
And MORE importantly.... Half you guys who are bitching are addicts of a fucking video game forum. Repeat: A VIDEO GAME FORUM. You spend your time on the internet discussing and playing video games too. Sure in the "video game world" being an FPS jockie is definitely football star to the WoW players chess team, but in the real world.... Your both fucking losers.
If you have an Xfire account and huddle up in your little room on ventrilo geeking out over the latest FPS video game I am not seeing how you are any better.
Sure its a lame video game, but really are any of you kids out there acting like gun experts on video game forums when your only shooting experience is with a mouse any fucking better?
It sucks because I think so many of you are so wrapped up in your own lifes for it to really carry any impact but again : YOUR REGULAR MEMBERS OF A VIDEO GAME FORUM.
That is about the nerdiest shit ever. I know, I am here too... Nerdy shit over here also, I geek out plenty... But you guys have very little room to talk about "those losers and their video game."
I've know people who disappeared to countersrike, I know how many of us disappeared for a time to BF2 and regular people look at it no different then all the people who disappear to WoW. As far as real life is concerned few of you have very much room to criticize

I'd argue that someone who rages as much as you do (on an internet forum!1!111) almost certainly doesn't.

Music and video games are very different things. Music is much more of "Art" then making a video game is. Video games have historically be made and judged on their ability to entertain, rather then their depth or Beauty. Video games are about playing and having fun.Poseidon wrote:

Music is much more about art, look at the history of music and you will see that "Classics" are judged so based on their depth and beauty, while in the world of video games "Classics" are most certainly not, they are based on sheer face value entertainment.
I do however recognize that as business and media grow music has taken on more of an entertainment value with less worry about depth. So ok, if we are talking about making pop music, the Jonas Brothers are indeed remarkable POP MUSICIANS. They do that very well your right.

I actually wasn't emphasizing just the fact that you are on a forum, but the fact that we are so into video games that we spend an appreciable amount of time on a forum dedicated to it. If it was a forum for something more "cool" it would be different, but we are talking about judging people here, and the fact is there is a bit of judgment to be drawn about people who are such big gamers (of any type) that they join discussion forums to talk about it.
However since you bring up the impact of discussion forums such as thing on peoples lives

Honestly, pretty fucking close to the point I was making in my post.... Get to the search button and find examples of where I put people down for being into WoW? I don't play the game, never have, and have no desire to.... But fuck it with all the hours of BF2 I have spent playing who am I to make fun of someone for playing a video game? That was my whole point. With few exceptions everyone here has probably spent "too much" time playing video games.Poseidon wrote:

Hell, remember the "Do your friends know?" thread? IIRC Majority vote was NO. Most people voted that in normal social settings they would prefer that people didn't know how big of gamers they were... WHY? Because its kind of nerdy. Sorry, that's just how common people view it. A lot less then 5 years ago, but still.
My hole point is look at your xfire game list and check out how many hours you(the general you) have spent gaming. When your a big gamer, on a big internet forum about gaming, you have very little room to make fun of a big internet game.
Don't dance around it. You made the notion that popularity = good. So by your logic, Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers are music gods in your world.VicktorVauhn wrote:

I'm neither defending or attacking Burwhale's point. I'm simply laughing at the idea that posting on an internet forum = no life. How the fuck do you know what people do outside of the forums? You don't. How can you track how much time someone's spent on this forum? You can't. You're just reaching into your ass and pulling the deepest, darkest shit out that you can find.Honestly, pretty fucking close to the point I was making in my post.... And FTR, I've never said WoW is a shitty game. The only thing I've ever said (atleast to my recollection) is that it didn't interest me.
Not really, I said that in the entertainment category that entertainment is good... I will stand by that. But you can't just say that because popularity marks success in entertainment media that it denotes "good" in all categories. Hitler had massive popularity for a while, But the statement that the most popular video game ever is good doesn't mean that Hitler was a good man. Why? Because not only are they entirely different categorizes, but "good" is so general that we don't even know on what basis we are judging it good.Poseidon wrote:

I am judging video games as an entrainment media, and stating that as video game were designed and created with the sole intent to entertain popularity is a good basis, the only question is "Are you entertained", and the number of people paying monthly is a good basis to judge how many are entertained.
Music has always been deeper then just being for entertainment. That is why Miley Cyrus and Jonas Brothers are not good.
However, judging them based simply on their ability to entertain the target demographic, as you would judge a video game, yes they are doing very well. "Gods" I don't know about since I doubt they will maintain their levels of popularity for long... Say for instance CoD4, It entertained its target demographic very well, until the next in the series comes out and they move along. Same thing with the disposable pop starts, so I dunno about gods. Interestingly enough WoW will/has outlasted either of those two names....
I actually didn't bring up "having lives" until you did, and have still yet to say that forum users have no lives. In fact In my last post I said it's only a fringe group who have no lives in both categories, and that is the most I said about forum users having no life.Poseidon wrote:

Not only that, in my last post I pointed out the fact that it wasn't necessarily even about using a forum... Its about being a big enough gamer to join a gaming forum.
The point is we are talking about passing judgment on people, that's what this thread is... or mostly is, people who think WoW is for losers and that another lame game is being made into a movie.
My whole point was that while people here think some one is a loser for playing Wow, "Normal" people would likely think that someone who is into video games enough to join a forum devoted to daily discussion of the topic is a loser too. Don't believe me? Go to a party or a crowded bar, walk up into a group and start talking about your involvement with video games, and ask people if they would like to join a forum with you about a great FPS called BF2.
I remember one time I was on the bus to school, and some guy started trying to strike up a conversation with a girl he obviously liked. He asked her if she had heard of this video game "spore", she responded "What? do I like sports?", he went on and it became painful to watch.
Its just kind of a nerdy thing we do. That is the entire reason I bring the forum up. Being a member of a video game forum is kind of nerdy. Doesn't mean your a complete nerd for being here, and I am sorry if you didn't know that... but its true.
And there you go, your basically not who I am talking to at all. My hole point is that when you say "look at the loser playing WoW!" everyone else is looking at you saying "Look at the loser playing counter strike!", we are all here so we all know we all do at least SOME nerdy shit... Give it a rest, your 8000 hours of BF2 and screen full of metals is no cooler then WoW.Poseidon wrote:

Fuck guys, lighten up. I know I havent played WoW and thought it was a mediocre game, then to get flamed for it as I hadnt played it. I based my opinion on the fact that all of my friends play it, and I have watched them play hours of it. I am relatively familiar with most of the concepts involved. I also have to listen to them rabbit on about it for hours ( which can be boring as you may imagine). I feel I am somewhat qualified to know if I think a game is not my cuppa tea or not.
If you like it , good for you, frankly I couldnt care less. Personally I dont like it, and wont be hiding that.
I guess I have a problem with a game that you buy, have to play mega hours of to get anywhere. Are encouraged to walk up to a rock and click on it pointlessly for hours. Slay thousands of meaningless critters for hours on end, that takes no skill at all. And then pay a monthly fee for the priviledge.
Like I said, not my scene, if you like that kind of thing go for your life.

I'll probably watch it just to see what the fuck they could make a movie out of.

Actually I may watch it as it is directed by Sam Raimi. Definitely watch it if Bruce Campbell is in it.
^You got a point. Thats what ruined Warcraft for me . What storyline can you make out of an MMO?Adams_BJ wrote:

Now a movie based off the Warcraft RTS games (aka Warcraft 3 & 2) would be awesome .
They better make it off the lore on Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne before or after, not this World of warcrap
It's going to be based on the story behind the game, not the gameplay...
I'd watch it if there's elf porn in it.

ontopic; i would see a w.o.w. movie, totally character driven. fuck plot 'n storyline, oh, and throw in some CGI, make a two minute trailer. i smell success. or that other pile . . . .
Blimey! I'm posting on BF2S again, what gives?
Some of you may remember me (<3), and may remember that I started a gaming community because of Bf2, that we were a competitive clan and that we did that whole medics vs snipers thing. Some may even know that I've been playing WoW for most of the time since.
I actually remember thinking much the same way about the game as many in this thread seem to now. "It's a girls game, right?" was one of my lines. I had in mind some kinda time-sink of the order of Sims or maybe Black & White. But what the hell, a BF2 patch had removed hot spawning on squad leaders and the clan match community we were a part of disappeared up it's own backside so I might as well play this girls game with the gf for a bit... right?
Well, as I dawdled my way through the levels and waited for the BF rebirth we preyed BF2142 would be (lal) I came to realise something. If there is any part of the gaming world that really gets your goat, that makes you grind your teeth with frustration or roll your eyes in disbelief then it's probably a part of WoW. But that's not because WoW is all the crap that gaming has to offer scooped up in one bag and cleverly marketed to 11 million dopes, it's because you can pick almost any aspect of gaming and find it in WoW.
Ok, so I'm not gonna blow smoke up your ass and try and sell you on WoW. I'm not some Blizzard fanboy who thinks WoW is "OMGWTF soooo great!" I'm certainly not gonna tell you that a 10 day trial will get you (experienced, discerning gamers) hooked. But it's a good game. It caters to casuals (some would say too much) and hardcore gamers alike. In the DMZ we focus on the player vs the game (PvE, endgame) side of things and do reasonably well considering we oust anyone with a personality bypass (11M players, yes, there are a lot of dicks - often dicks can play well). Many who are more FPS aligned prefer the player vs player aspects. this tends to be the emo QQ crowd so I don't know if that reflects badly on FPS gamers or not. :oP
Anyway, I'm here as one of you (formerly at least) to say that WoW players are just gamers. It's a media that draws emos and asshats, ambassadors and angels but mostly just people having some fun; whatever game they play
As for the movie (getting back on topic ftw) I was kinda expecting some dross ala FF but with this announcement I actually have some hope for it. As has been mentioned, the Warcraft mythos is pretty cool and can probably hold up a movie or few. Sure, the lore is richer in the RTS back-catalogue but then that's the nature of RTS to tell a story whereas an MMO is typically a point in time (stretched over 4-5 years). The history is something like 10,000 years and some of it really pretty cool though I expect the (first) film to be set around the kinda things that are happening in WoW at the moment or at least have pretty strong ties to the currently (projected) unfolding storyline.
For those of you that played the RTS (making the crass assumption that none of you play the MMO) Arthas is big in the story atm but with the expected next patch (Cataclysm) we can expect to see Azshara and a load of Naga. The king of Stormwind is a strong contender of a part in the film too (not the kid).
tl:dr version.
Having been big in the BF2 scene and now big in the WoW one I can confirm that both games rock. Honest.
The film could well be very cool in the same way Batman comics were cool and Dark Knight was cool despite the kinda embarrassing TV series.

Two things, because I've debated for WoW enough in other threads and would rather not beat the wall more:
Blizzard can make really fucking awesome cinematics. Go download WC3 and watch them. If they have creative control of the screenplay, it would work out very well.
Supposedly, another expansion is in the works for WoW. If the released info is accurate (and it usually is) then the plot is becoming rather more intricate. Not that it isn't already, but they're adding tons of lore which could only help the movie along, if not coincide with the expansion.
