There is a lession to be learned here. Since Obama if the first person to break the barrier of traditional white, male presidents, don't be suprised or shocked if one of his critics pushes the envelope of political correctness. People need to stop these double-standards of "their" presidents. It borderlines the yentas who believe their children can do no wrong. An anonymously-designed poster that shows Barack Obama as the Joker from the Batman films has stirred up controversy in the US.
It features an image of the US president's face painted white, with black circles round his eyes and slits round the side of a blood-red painted mouth.
The word 'socialism' is written underneath.
The striking poster, which is from an unknown source, has been pasted up in subways and other public spaces in Los Angeles.
It has caused confusion, debate and suggestions of racism from media commentators across the US - and generated heated discussion on blogs and social networks.
Writing in the newspaper LA Weekly, politics reporter Steven Mikulan said: "It has a bit of everything to appeal to the drunk tank of California conservatism."
"The only thing missing is a noose."
Tommy Christopher, of media news and opinion blog Mediaite, says Mr Mikulan may be "overstating" the issue, but nevertheless concludes the poster "is immediately and strongly evocative of blackface minstrel shows".
But Thomas Lifson, of the conservative American Thinker blog, said: "There will be more of this. Count on it.
"Obama's cool image is so 2008. It's a long way down from lowering the oceans to laughingstock."
It is suggested the posters have been prompted by Mr Obama's recent policy announcements on health care and stimulus spending.
However, the combination of the Joker face with the term 'socialism' has also provoked bewilderment.
"It's graphically striking, but politically obtuse. The Joker is a wild man; Obama is no-drama; the Joker is an anarchist; Obama is a community organiser," wrote Andrew Sullivan in political blog the Daily Dish.
For some, the message behind the poster is craftily subversive rather than overtly political.
"The Joker would have a field day turning both sides on the other while they eat themselves, that's the whole point of the Joker," wrote Jack Napier in a comment on the LA Times blog.
"And maybe that's the whole point of the joke; create a controversy, upset the apple cart, and watch people go!"
George W Bush was also characterised as the Joker by Vanity Fair in 2008.
