Is this a bad idea?

Because my Steam install was so big, I decided to move it over to my external hard drive to save space.

Now however, I keep getting short freezes (half a second or so) whenever I play TF2/CSS.

I thought it was my net connection, because the choke would jump up whenever it freezed like that in CSS, but in TF2 my choke doesn't seem to have any connection to the short FPS drops.

So....is it the fact that it's on my external drive, or is it okay, and I just have some other problem?

I'd say yes, installing on an external isnt a good idea.  It's limited by the speed of USB which is pretty slow compared to internal drives

Who said it was USB?

If it is USB, it is a bad idea, if it is eSATA, it is fine.
90% of externals are USB, I'd say its a pretty fair assumption

Yeah, it's USB.

Hmmm...
I'll see if it works better on my internal HD.

Where do you get your figures, sir?
Go to Best Buy, I've yet to see an e-SATA one there.  And even newegg and stuff most are USB. Plus lots of people don't even have an eSATA port, I know my laptop and old computer dont.

Besides,

Games like BF2 and other games that need similar data transfer will do that for me. However games like Fallout 1 and 2 seem to have no problem.
Call of Duty 2, at least on single player, seems to have no issues whatsoever for my external hard drive installation.

Never install Games on an external drive. Tthey will all perform worse than the same internal drive.

eSATA is a standard that has been slow to take off in the market. It's not bad, but USB is ubiquitous.

Also, stats are made up. The point was that most external devices are, and will be for a while, USB.

I would suggest moving your porn to the external instead. It will suffer less from the performance drop.

It's already there.

I played half an hour or so of CSS on the internal drive, and did not get any FPS drops, so that must be it.

Thanks guys.
