So I just got a new hard drive for my old HP computer which has just stood there without a hard drive for a while. Anyways, I can't instal windows on it cause it won't recognize it. And no it's not in BIOS either.
It's a samsung 160GB spinpoint F1 3.5" SATA II/300 8MB 7200RPM.

You ran Windows install disk and it didn't recognize it? Btw is this your only desktop PC? What happened with the old drive?

I booted it up the first time with the disk, tried to install it but couldn't.

go in BIOS and see if there's an option to switch SATA mode from AHCI to IDE.

no option? or doesn't work?

Then you need to download SATA drivers for your mobo and copy them to a floppy drive. I've done that before, had an older Abit NF7s mobo and WD 40GB HDD. Once floppy is loaded you just press F6 when Windows installer starts to load drivers and then pick the correct driver from the list.

well then what else is to suggest? Check if (all) cables are well plugged in (data, power) maybe try the HDD in a different system?

Is your copy of Windows SP2, or is it SP1 or older?  If your disk isn't SP2, you could try making a new disk, and slipstream SP3 into it.  The original release and SP1 were very poor at supporting SATA.

It's SP3.
I think it's just the crappy old HP mobo which in fact is a A7V8X-LA. I just need to find the SATA drivers for it...

I think I lucked out here, my dad had this floppy thingy which can be connected via USB. So I put the driver in there and happily tried to install xp. I pressed F6 and asked me to insert the floppy, did that, pressed enter, and it said couldn't find txtsetup.oem or soemthing like that. Now wtf?
