So, has anyone been rushing out to buy 10.6 today?

I only ask because the launch has meant a fucking nightmare for me at work today.

Overall it seems pretty good to me, but I've only been using it a few weeks now and have only just upgraded to the GM.

Still tossing up getting a mbp, I got paid today and am off all next week   I believe if you buy a machine from today it comes with it already in.

I've heard a few guys in the office cumming over its release today.

I've had to put up with that for almost a month! On a scale you can't even believe.

It does seem pretty good though. Leaner, faster version of Leopard with a few more bells and whistles.

My mate bought it the day it came out. He seems pretty happy with it.

It does seem pretty impressive, and this is coming from someone who's been pretty anti-OSX for many years.

Where do you work?

I had no idea it came out today until reading this thread.  I don't think it's the "Most advanced operating system" they claim it to be...but Apple always advertises 2-3 year old concepts as brand new technology, so I guess I couldn't really expect much.

http://www.apple.com/macosx/technology/

Pretty fucking lame how they devoted half the page to tell you about 64 bit.  Whoever graphed the speed of 32 bit vs. 64 bit must of been either stoned, drunk or both.

it's bloody fast, i'll tell you that much.

64-bit may not be revolutionary technology, but my god. compare the difference between 32/64-bit internet explorer on windows and 32/64 bit safari... whoosh. when using OSX you're not really accustomed to 'waiting' for things to load or kick into action anyway, but this latest (and ridiculously cheap) upgrade to the operating system makes it feel like my operating system is now running on NOS. im impressed with it.

They say it shouldn't be mistaken with an update as its supposed to be a completely new OS.

how so? it costs like £20 and does nothing but make your machine faster and easier to use. it's like a windows service pack, only one that simplifies things instead of introducing another 21251 bugs and loopholes. at the moment a few software suites dont have support for the new osx, but it's a marketing move on their part- forcing users to buy their latest version, such as with adobe and photoshop cs3/cs4 (cs3 will have no snow leopard support, give us your bucks for cs4 etc). i dont see how anyone can complain in principle about paying for an upgrade that, well, actually upgrades your os.

My only real issue with it is that in my mind going from 10.5 to 10.6 isn't really a new OS, so getting people to pay for it seems a little cheap. That said, it's not much money and is worth doing, so it's a good idea to upgrade.

Not much money for the individual.

They still get a shit load as of it all adding up.

It totally is a new OS.

Saying otherwise is silly. It is not like a Windows service pack. It couldn't work as a bolt on to the OS, it takes half of the OS out and doesn't work on half the hardware that 10.5 does, for a start.

The way it works is totally different. In many ways it's a bigger difference under the hood than Windows 7 is to Vista. The stripping out of old PPC compliance is a big step, makes it go faster and makes the OS install way smaller. The new kernel and focus on 64-bit is great. New image handling. New email systems compliance. New directory services handling.

Maybe it's a bit light on front end tweaks, but all OSX releases are.

Also, no serials or activation for OS's is pure win.

That's because the speed improvements due to it being 64-bit are insane. It goes SOOO much faster, particularly for loading images. The optimisations from removing all the redundant PPC code are great too - faster and smaller, yes please.

And it doesn't seem horribly full of bugs (unlike 10.5 did at launch).

Ah, fair enough, I had it down as just being a service pack type thing. So at what point will they bring out OS11, or do they like the way OSX sounds, so they'll just stick with that?

oh boo fucking hoo

people make millions out of manufacturing 1p bottle-caps, i dont see you making an ethical stand against the factories. what a joke.

it's a cheap upgrade and adds huge speed/functionality upgrades. no buts or ifs. it's worth it, stop finding reasons to whine already. nothing about '64-bit' excited me or made much difference in windows - more problems than advantages, but the 64-bit applications in OSX really are worth talking about. it just works. click, done. poof. if you have a £1,000 laptop then a £15 upgrade to double your hardware's effective speed isnt really worth crying about.

.Sup, You can do it with installations off torrents and the like, Takes awhile finding one that works with the hardware you have in your machine, Does a alright job when installed, Its alittle slower compared to a offical OS.

I have had it for a few days and then tried to customise it and it fucked up.. Reinstalled XP, bit better.

OnTopic: 10.6 is pretty good, interface wise its pretty much the same, and 10.5 rocks. At least Apple customers get some upgrade discount, Windows upgrade customers dont (AFAIK)

i wasnt aware i was quoting anything there... im just talking in plain terms about the os. i dont want to write an essay to people that are anti-apple no matter fucking what. some people wont listen to how much better 64-bit OSX is compared to 64-bit windows. the boot/shut-down times, app load times and general use of the operating system is streamlined and lightning fast.
