I'll probably move back in about 2 weeks or so. I'll be ridiculously busy with work and parties though, so it'll probably take me a good month to get back up to scratch. Don't think I'm going to play for any teams or on any leagues this year, too much of a distraction and time-sink! Casual pubs for me!

Of course I'm not under the impression that they believe having a hat = gain skill. But people do seem to view them as some sort of 'status icon' or statement-maker about their own commitment and ability in the game. What other value do they have? What other incentives are there to have one? All 13,000 idlers in my opinion seem to obsessively want a hat because they value them with the connotations of 'plays a lot' or 'dedicated player' etc. When really the vast majority of people with hats now are just people demonstrating their own pointlessness.

What is the point in using such heavy handed tactics on such an enormous percentage of your playerbase?

It's hardly heavy handed is it?

He seems to be whining way too much over something he himself says is ludicrously trivial.

Valve clearly wanted them to be rare, and not farmed by every achievement server dickwad. So they did this, if he can't realise that then it's his problem. It's up to Valve what they do and if he doesn't want to play for that amount of time to get a hat then too bad, go find another game like dress up barbie or some shit.

Don't really care about that, it was an even more pointless introduction to the game-design (if that is even possible after their calamitous series of game-changes as of late). Hats have the association that someone has 'played' or cheaply-idled several hundred hours of TF2 with lady-luck on their side... the medal states that a person was awake when a website-link went live. To be honest I don't consider or even bat an eyelid when I frag someone with or without a hat/medal. That's my entire point. They're trivial decorations. Why are 13,000 people so hellbent and fussed over having them?

Well for me I really love the Tough Guy's Toque, and want it on my Heavy. It reminds me of Firefly and I love it. If, to increase my chances of recieving it, I can run a small command prompt while i'm browsing the web or playing other games then so be it.

It's just a simple case of "It's in the game, I want it" that causes 13,000 people to use the idler program. That feeling that you're collecting things. I don't see the hats as any sort of status symbol,. They were awarded randomly to the person wearing them. I just think some of them look pretty cool and others don't. I don't want a hat so others can see it. It's for me. Yes, I won't be able to see it most of the time, but I can during taunts (a lot in setup), humiliation, and in the backpack/loadout menu. I've used the program to no avail these last few weeks (probably because I only put it on when i put the computer on instead of leaving it on 24/7 like a lot of people do), but I wouldn't exactly say i'm "hellbent and bussed" over getting a hat. It would be nice to get one, and the idler makes it a lot more likely. That's all. You can start it, and forget about it.

It's just the feeling of collecting, like in hundreds of other interests in the world. Surely you can understand that compulsion.
