Perhaps I'm being too cynical or overreacting. Need advice.

Hi.

Um so at University one of the classes I took to fill in a requirement was "Contemporary Moral Issues". Reading and understanding the course work is easy enough but the only thing is we have to give one group presentation during this semester.

I have no problem with public speaking or any of that but I really don't want to have to rely on some stranger to do their part in order for me to get the grade I want.

I could get into the Independent study which would be the same class minus the presentation but plus 3 papers.

Do you think I'm just being a bit cynical about having to work and rely on a stranger or do you think it would be better off to just do the independent study?

I have, mostly on much smaller projects in Uni, in HS on the bigger ones it was fine since I knew who I was working with for years and knew who I could and couldn't rely on.

This is complete strangers who I don't know jack about, that we are going to have to work together and agree on some moral issue bullshit write up a few papers for it, give a presentation, and then write up another debunking another groups paper and presentation.

I would rather work alone on something like that.

it's just one project macbeth, even if you have completely opposing views im sure you can both come together to deliver something decent and get your good marks. working with people and strangers in teams is something that you just have to do... break the ice and get on with it. you could opt for the independent study but you'd only be failing and cheating yourself really; working with other people is a skill you should probably focus on developing

Depends on what you want to do. If you think you can pull off three good papers and do it better than the presentation, why not. Don't listen to others acting like it's your only option and that it's a life lesson. It's not a fucking life lesson. It's easy as shit anyway. And when the day comes when you're forced to do it, you can do it, for now, you have the choice of doing something else, and if you want to do that something else, do it.

Not always. Part of the whole point of group projects is to teach you to work with others, and to get them to pick up their own share of the work. If they absolutely do not cooperate then you should talk to the professor before the project is due.

From my experience at University level it is mostly down to how much work YOU do. Lecturers aren't dumb, they know that some will put in more work than others. It's fairly obvious who actually puts the work in and who coasts along. Also in most cases you submit your part of the assignment and get a mark from that as well.

But if this is not the case and it's certainly not always the case, if you do your work and you do it well you'll get an okay mark, even if you're working with completely dullards. I deinitely think you should do it instead of opting for the other papers, you've got to learn how to work with people, even if they are complete morons who don't know their arse from their elbow. What's more than likely is that they're worried about you being a complete doofus too.

I've done group work in nearly EVERY course so far at uni. They stress it, because that is the nature of real life (especially working in engineering). So suck it up

I guess in part, it come down to how your lecturer/tutors deal with creating the groups. For instance, in this semester's Global Business Environment course, I had to do a 25 minute group presentation. As finding good team mates was essential, we spent the first tutorial getting to know everyone else. That was it - no work due, no case study to go over in class. It was only in the second week that we had to choose the groups.

Ideally you will be able to get around the "what if they don't do their work?" problem by proper planning and team coordination. None of the "do it the night before" shit that people so often fall back on. And even then, if they haven't done their part, you just speak to your tutor.

Cannot stress this enough.

For example, there is this guy in my microeconomics and accounting tutorials. In the first microeconomics tute, he proclaimed that he had "failed this subject last semester". Further discussion revealed that he "didn't really go to the tutes". Needless to say, our marks were rather different for the first tutorial test.
