I have a computer sitting here that refuses to POST (At least no picture to screen) and I am pretty confused about what the problem is.
The case is: My brother told me to come look at his computer. It would occassionally freeze and if the monitor went to power saving mode, it would not turn on without a reboot. I checked the machine, thought it was about memory, replaced his memory sticks with one of my own, reseated the CPU cooler (was a bit on the hot side), and the computer worked wonders.
Then, two days later the same symptoms would happen again. I had also tested that the memory works in another computer. Now what I have here is a computer that gives me a black screen and some error beeps (Long, short, short). According to ASUS (mobo manufacturer) the beeps mean bad memory, but then again, if I remove memory alltogether, I only get one long beep, but if I have memory in and no GPU it's again 3 beeps, confusing. Also the memory works in another computer.
I have tried clearing CMOS before anyone asks. I have also tried only mandatory parts as well as using every memory stick individually and sticking them in different slots.
Specs: (The computer is a prebuilt Fujitsu Siemens from early 2006, stock, except for GPU that was installed to replace a dead x600)
Mobo: ASUS A8NE FM/S
CPU: Athlon 64 3400+ (S939)
Memory:
His: 4x256MB DDR400, some Samsung stuff, one sided
Mine: 1x512MB DDR400, some Nanya stuff, double sided
GPU: ASUS Radeon X1950 Pro (PCI)
PSU: Some Fortron 350W (15A and 10A 12V rails)
HD: 250GB Samsung, SATA
OD: Some DVD+-RW
I am really confused. It shouldn't be overheating, memory should work fine, and the error beeps would tell me it's not the GPU (even though the PSU is not the best ever), and those are what I would blame on such problems.
Any help would be appreciated.
