My crummy 5 yr old rig.

3.0GHz CPU
1Gb Ram (which is the maximum
GFX ATI Radeon X600 256Mb
No fancy PSU or CPU cooling.
Win XP Pro

PC Upgrade just for a game is not an option.

Is it worthwhile changing the GFX card?

Locally available GFX cards.

Whats the min spec which will do a reasonable job?
Bearing in mind the crapness of my 5yro PC no point in overdoing it.

Suggestions please

tbh, your best bet is just saving up and buying a new rig.

Does your motherboard have a PCI-E slot or an AGP slot?

Heh, MSY.  Good prices generally, but no service whatsoever.

see the thing is if you upgrade the gfx then your system will be bottlenecked by the RAM and CPU so imo you should just get a new rig. Don't think of it for a game think of it as a new computer for everything you would do on the old one but faster and better.

MOBO = PCI-E
Prefer Nvidea to ATI as they tend to work better with CAD applications.
I'll probably get a new PC when Win 7 is stable (I really don't want another Vista machine in the house)
For now I just want the min spec GFX to play COD4.
$100 Card + $100 game
$2500 PC +$100 game (I'd rather buy a new one and have the old one as a backup than mess with MOBOs etc)

If its not doable then its back to BF2

9800GT does the job great for me, but I'm sure a 9600 would work well too.  (I can play on all high @ 1900 X 1200 and still have 60 or so FPS...)

I've heard this so many times about the stores over east, however everything I've heard about the Perth store has been excellent.

Unless there are any better suggestions:
512Mb 9900 GT

Just remains Inno3D, ECS, Gigabyte, Gainward?

Don't really expect service from a PC component store, as long as they take it back if it doesn't work.

Gigabyte are good quality, they slightly overclock the stock cards but keep it to a level that means you get better performance but no heating issues.

If you don't want to pay that much, a 512mb 8800 GT will run Cod4 on pretty high/full gfx, I'm just not sure about your RAM.

A system like that with 2gb of ram and a 512mb 8800 GT would run cod4 with everything maxed out. It's what I use.

In that case 512Mb 9600GT from Gigabyte sounds like the go.
If its then limited by the CPU/RAM then so be it.
Bit of luck I'll set up a company soon and will be able to buy a new PC as part of that
Thanks to all.

I have a 9600GT myself, and it runs pretty much anything I throw at it.

Even though I still class it as my temporary upgrade...

When I get a new rig and stick this one in a case with baby oil that won't be temporary.

Get the 9600gt/8800gt. Anything more will most likely be bottlenecked by the rest of your rig.

lol same. It was only supposed to last a few months but no games have been released that have made me need to replace it yet. Cool beans.

Update:
My PSU can't take anything better than a 9400GT - which seems like a pretty crummy card, more multimedia than gaming.

https://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj256/Dilbert_X/CoD_4.jpg

I'm not going to be playing at greater resolution than 1280x1024, will the 9400GT do it?

If I get a 9500, 9600 or 9800 and a new PSU is it going to be choked by the CPU?
Could maybe get some more ram also.

COD4 Does play choppily on my old card at 800x600.
PSU Dell 305W 12V-18A
