DO WANT!

Intel is finishing up the developement of the true USB/firewire/ethernet cable replacement:

The cable can be as long as 100 meters and can carry data at 10 gigabits per second in both directions simultaneously, though Intel expects it will reach 100 gigabits per second in the next decade

Overall, I like the idea, but there are three things it will have to address before I will buy in.

1. It *must* be powered. What is the point of having one cable if I have 20 wall warts and power cables running everywhere?
2. It *must* have one *and* only one type of plug instead of the 20 different USB plugs we have now.
3. They have to prove that the cable will have the same durability as a copper one. Fiber is much more fragile and they are going to have to come with with a Jacket/Sheath that properly protects the cable.

Coming to market cheap would be a huge bonus.
I agree with this guy so much. I hate having to have a different cable for my phone, camera, or anything else, if they all end in USB.

so you'd rather want fat A type USB in your phone, camera etc.? I doubt so.

I think he meant that the cables for his phone and camera have a standard USB jack at one end but different connectors at the other end. Meaning he can't use the one cable for both things.

Same with me. While my phone has a "standard" mini USB, my camera has some special Nikon one. Which is just really annoying.

1. That would be nice, USB does that now as well.  Maybe not too much power though since it would drain on laptop battery/require bigger desktop power supplies if its a lot.
2. I'd rather have at least 2 types.  I like having bigger, more durable plugs for monitors etc. Then smaller objects like cameras should have a smaller one.  Having 2 types really isnt a problem, especially compared to the 300 there are now.
3. Can't say I've had a problem with it ever, but I guess it cant hurt.

Edit: Actually, I think the best thing would be to have the standard ends, then when you buy a device that needs a special port (aka small one for camera) it has to have some sort of adapter.

I'm not saying use the fat USB end as the input to your camera/phone, but make a standard one that everyone uses, instead of 40,000 slightly different ones.

Or just make it a small interface from the start, then it doesn't matter.

I'd rather my monitor and some stuff have larger plugs tbh.  I like having screws in the monitor plug in case i accidentally hit the cable and knock it loose.  Having an adapter really shouldnt be a problem.

I hope they don't make the interconnects as fiddly as they are on most Intel cables...

Tiny little plasticky interconnects that fall to pieces the moment you touch them are rubbish.

True, although the chance of this suddenly become the standard for everything seems highly unlikely.
