I was honestly hoping someone would pop up and say "But you can do a clean install and everything will work!!".

Feck.

No, I don't pirate operating systems. If there is one thing  I want to legally own on my computer is my OS, too much work gets done for me to put my trust into a stupid piracy copy, which usually gets detected after MS release a whole new bunch of updates for 7.
I think your upgrade key will work for both the 32/64-bit versions.  You just need to get ahold of a 32-bit upgrade ISO.

Gah, it's damn near impossible to notice when someone talks to you on Windows Live Messenger. The icon on the startbar goes orange, but it's too small and hard to see. Much better in Vista/XP where the minimised window flashes at you.

Presumably this is the same for Steam/Xfire.

/me looks for a fix

Just installed the retail version of 7 after being on RC1 for 6 months.

Eargasmic.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Post a pic of the whole setup What are these speakers anyway, and what are you using for the source/to drive them?

Don't mind the mess, I'm short of storage space as I'm not really finished moving yet

The speakers are JBL 4311Bs, some nice, compact studio monitors from the mid-to-late 70's. Very popular due to their driver arrangement, price ($300 a piece, about $1500 in today's money) and intentional stock configuration of adding some light colouration to the sound, making them very useful to check how a recording sounds outside of the studio, in the studio. Of course, I run them as flat as possible

https://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb8/Freezer7Pro/43112-2.jpg

Very detailed and honest sound, virtually distortion free, topping at 1% THD and averaging about 0.5. Really nice to listen to too, not as tiring on the ears as most monitors tend to be.

For source I use my computer with a Xonar DX, and I drive them with the same good ol' Luxman L-120A that I've been using for a year or so. (Tape deck just there for the VU meters)

Rainmeter. It's a pretty cool app, allows you to stick cool stuff on your desktop.

Have a look at some of the stuff you can do with it. Linkage

No, when you install it there's a bunch of stuff you can add, but I only took the music app, since then one that came with the top bar didn't work with iTunes. It requires quite a lot of tweaking to get it to do exactly what you want, but it's good fun.

Linky to skin then? I'll do customisation when I've actually installed Windows 7 (backing up files and keeping certain settings for some programs is a huge pain).

That's the one I'm using. The default one is pretty cool though, so have a play with that as well. You can basically get it to do anything you want, especially if you're a code monkey like yourself.
