The Pianist is pretty good, but it still shouldn't matter.

Its what I've come to hate about this sort of status that surrounds these people. For some reason, no matter what crime they commit, they always get off with it, get off lightly or are defended by huge amounts of people, even when they're guilty. If any average everyday person did the same, they'd be banged up straight away and named a social pariah, they wouldn't have people lining the streets with banners saying they shouldn't be charged because it was 30 years ago.

So going by the logic of some people in this thread.....we might as well not do anything to the priests who have caused harm to children either...afterall, they have done years of good work, far better than making movies.  Sound good?

the difference is that victim (who now has a family and kids) does not want to relive this.

Or Hitler.

You know, he did have some nice architectural design plans and could hold some great rallies, he really improved Germany before the whole "war" thing, which too many people focus upon.

Needs of many outweigh the needs of one.

I think it is required that the law be upheld for celebrities, especially ones that run away from the law like he did.  Its not in her hands anymore.

People are not just punished for revenge they are also punished so that they cannont commit the same crime again. I am sure everyone defending him would love to have a child fucker living next door ro them.

And if he was not a celebrity, none of this would even be an issue.

Exactly, he'd already be in prison like a normal person.  If he hadn't run he'd probably be out by now too

I understand that she doesn't, but does that give him the right to just walk away. That wasn't my point, my point was that some people in here were basically stating that because he made good movies, the public should give him a break...which is ridiculous.

I know that this situation is a little different because of the victim and what she wants, but it still doesn't change the crime and the appropriate punishment. As I said, because someone has done something good, doesn't mean that he or she should avoid punishment, even years later.

The next time I go out, I'm going to help a little old lady across the street and then rob the next bank I see and then help her back across the street. I am sure I will be forgiven for doing a such good deed before and after.

I think the Swiss are trying to get into the good graces of the US after the Bush and Obama administrations leaned on them over the issue of tax shelters and the little matter of a UBS exec. that was caught smuggling diamonds into the US at the behest of an American client (he was apparently running "courses" in how to evade taxes and defraud the gov't which was apparently, according to him, encouraged by the bank).

It's pretty much a given that the Swiss gov't knew about the shady dealings of many of its banks so they really need to get back into the good graces of the US right now.

Polanski's certainly been dealt a lot of shit in life. Was a Jewish Pole during World War 2, lost his mother in Aushwitz, lost his pregnant wife to Charlie Mason's holy clusterfuck... it makes me feel bad for him, particularly because in general he seems like a good guy with a genuine talent.

But... unfortunately the rape of a 13 year-old can't just be ignored because he's had a few tough times and has talent. I do think the victim's wishes should be taken into account, she wants to let the whole thing rest and honestly I doubt Polanski would reoffend so he's not a danger to society.
But in this case it's not really relevant. He raped a thirteen year old girl. There are no mitigating circumstances that would make that okay. Like I said, I feel bad for the guy but there's no way I would argue in favour of him being "forgiven".

It surprising to me that no one is calling him for what he is in the media...he's a pedophile.

Any 44 year old man who has sex with a 13 year-old girl is a pedophile.  Period.

And add the fact that he even plead guilty to the charge.

Plus it wasn't just a simple con-sexual situation, apart from being statutory, he drugged her and supplied her with alcohol.

You're 100% right, the media for the most part has been distancing itself from calling him what he is.

Maybe offer Bin Laden an award to be received in Switzerland or France...then boom, we got him.

Lolita lookalike.

For some reason Samantha Geimer wants to forget all this but alas it's only been more than 30 years and revenge is a dish served cold.

I find it funny that the ones who are more violently condemning Polansky are the ones jerking off to Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez photos.

He drugged her
He raped her
He ran away before being served his sentence (he DID serve 45 days in jail for psychological screening, but that was before his sentencing)

People say this bullshit like "omg the victim wants to just live and let live" but the thing is, this is a criminal case not a civil case. It's not Victim v. Polanski, it's the State v. Polanski.

This article puts it all pretty good:

Victim: Courts did more harm than Polanski
The case began March 10, 1977, when the girl, then known as Samantha Gailey, agreed to be photographed by Polanski, according to court records. He told her mother he was on assignment for French Vogue.

They spent the afternoon shooting and, as the light began to fade, made their way to the hot tub at actor Jack Nicholson's house on Mulholland Drive. There, she told investigators, Polanski gave her champagne and part of a Quaalude and had sex with her.

She said she felt disoriented and disgusted by his overtures and repeatedly told him "no." She faked an asthma attack and begged him to take her home. She said she cried in his car afterward.

She spoke with People magazine in 1997. After her mother went to police, "all hell broke loose," Geimer said. The European media compared her to Lolita, the young seductress in fiction.

"The fallout was worse than what had happened that night," she told People. "It was on the evening news every night. Reporters and photographers came to my school and put my picture in a European tabloid with the caption Little Lolita. They were all saying, 'Poor Roman Polanski, entrapped by a 13-year-old temptress.' I had a good friend who came from a good Catholic family, and her father wouldn't let her come to my house anymore."

Interesting article, read the whole thing. Sounds like the European media are some real dicks. Also the details don't sound very nice.

i can't believe there are people saying he should get off.  That pedo fuck has to serve and ultimately the concept of time is irrelevant when justice has to be served.

So how about Bin laden gets off 20 years after 9/11....yeah i wonder how that would go down.

exactly. if this was some bum off the street you all would be calling for his head to be chopped off. but because he's some fuck who made a few movies he's suddenly immune to justice? you people disgust me
