Oooo. Didn't take that into account.

@Poseidon: Why do you need so much time? Surely you could do enough traveling in 1-2 months?

You can cruise ship/ferry it from Cyprus or Greece I believe. They call into port on the north coast and you jump on a day trip to the pyramids and Cairo. I'll post a response to your OP when I get back from work.

Go by train. Renting or buying a car would be more expensive. I know that in summer you can buy a thing called Interrail ticket, which lets young people and students travel by train in whole Europe for a two hundred euros or so. Keep your eyes open for something like that.

why would you want to spend 2/3 weeks in Amsterdam? a weekend is more than enough..

edit : oh I see you mean in the Netherlands, still.. Amsterdam is a tourist trap..

I would pick public transport over a car.
Europe has a long history of public transport, so everything you might want to see will be accessible.
That and every european country has slightly different road rules, some cities are nightmares to park in even if you know them, petrol is expensive there so one person in a car can work out badly.
Don't have a car, spend some of what you save on the occasional taxi and it should go a lot easier.

Work out a timetable for what you want to see. 2-3 weeks in Amsterdam would be way too much for example
Set a budget and track it, then if you start running out of money you can adjust your plan - rather than miss something you really wanted to see.

There are some festivals you might want to plan in, eg Oktoberfest, or gigs.
Hostels etc need to be booked well in advance for that kind of thing.

If you plan your trip carefully what you got to spend is enough. Forget about hotels and as Dilbert mentioned driving around is an headache. If you're interested in meeting lots of people you might wanna look into couchsurfing for accommodation and check ryanair or easyjet for cheap flights.
Last August one of my friends traveled most of  Europe with only 1000 euros, he came back a lot skinnier though...

I was thinking: Depending on what your interests are, typical tourism or adventure?

UK/Ireland: 4 weeks - Don't forget Scotland
Czech Republic: 2 weeks - 2 weeks is way to long, only interesting city is Prague and that can be done in 3 days, cheap hotel=Hotel Bonaparte, transfeer the rest to Greece
France: 1 week - 1 week in Paris alone is to little, 10 weeks if you can afford it
Germany: 2 week - Mosel Valley(Trier) and Bavaria - 2 weeks is okay me thinks
Netherlands/Amsterdam: 2 weeks - Also too long, transfeer 1,5 weeks to greece
Italy: 3 weeks - I agree with this, train from north to south and don't miss Venice, Milan and Rome in particular
Greece : 1 week - "Boatjumping" between islands in Greece is just pure awsmness, 3 weeks minimum
Sweden: 1 week - Boring
Norway: 1 week - Rafting in Sjoa(adventure) and you can do alpine summer events in Stryn
Finland: 1 week - Ask Donnie
Spain: 1 week - Spain mainland I would limit to Catalonia, best region without doubt
My humble opinion and comments

Yeah good luck.
In 1999 I went for 3 weeks and it cost 5.5k.
My brother went over in 2007 and spent about 4 months and it cost him well over 30k and he slept on park bench's some nights and the trains many other nights.
My mother went over last year for 3 months and it cost about 20k, and she got free flights and accommodation with relatives for 2 weeks.

You'll need lots more money if you're going for that long, especially if you intend to hire a car or sleep in hotels.

Also I suggest going to Dubai and Egypt while your over there.
You and your friend clearly have a major coke habit, or stayed only in the best hotels and flew everywhere.

Poseidon, a protip for you. Stay in youth hostels, and get an Interrail pass. Means you can take the train anywhere within Europe for as long as you buy it for, and it's cheap. You could easily do it for 3k if you do it like that.

You mean 3k just for the train ticket right. Coz that is about how expensive it would be. Cost me £150 for a 2 week zone 3 pass. He would need a 19 week all zone pass.

16 days in eastern europe cost me about £1000 and that was with us planning it out months in advance staying in the cheapest places we could find.

Bad thinking to be honest. I am from Holland and even if you would like the country it is just to small to spend two weeks in.

TBH:

UK/Ireland: 2 weeks
Czech Republic: 1 weeks
Germany & Austria: 2 week (still a bit long though if you'd ask me, but that's personal)
Benelux (Netherlands + Belgium + Luxemburgh) & North-Eastern France: 1 week
Rest of France: 2.5 weeks
Italy: 2 weeks
Greece : 2 weeks (things are too wide spread in Greece to do in one week, unless you want to be going 200mph 24/7)
Scandinavia: 1.5 weeks
Iberian Peninsula: 1 week
Western Turkey (Istanbul): 1 week
Russia: 3 weeks

Same ammount of weeks, more variation, less been-there-done-that in smaller countries.

360 quid for a month pass through all countries. So a little over a grand for 3 months, depending how long he actually ends up doing it. Hostels are 15-20 euros per night, depending on where you are.

360 quid pass if ur under 18. I presume he wont be. Its 545 quid for a month otherwise. Quite a difference. He could get a none continuous one. But that limits your traveling options alot.

hostels were 20-30 euros in eastern europe. So i highly doubt they will be that cheap in western europe. going at the 20 scale thats still 2500 euros for 19 weeks. Add on the train. Add on flights. Add on eating and social stuff.

He is NOT going to do this for 3k.

Hey Poseidon, if you really want to see the world may I suggest attending SUNY Maritime College in Throggs Neck (The campus literally under the bridge). It has a fantastic engineering program (though no aerospace, sorry) and for two months every summer they take a cruise on the schools ship, the Training Ship: Empire State to Europe. They usually visit 4-5 ports every summer and spend about 3 days in each. My younger brother visited the Bahamas, Rome, Poland, Copenhagen, Kiel Germany, Dublin, Mayorca, Greece, Turkey, Estonia, and a bunch of other places I can't remember off the top of my head.

When you graduate from the school you will have a license to operate as either a 3rd mate or a 3rd assistant engineer on any ship in the world. Obviously there is nothing forcing you to sail but it's an option to fall back on.

I'm currently finishing up my degree in electrical engineering from the school. I chose not to go for the license option so I haven't gone on any of the cruises but the kids always have fun.

www.sunymaritime.edu if you're interested.
