sucks that this game forces you to use the (shitty and redundant) gamespy system, when it's already distributed on steam. steam has a perfectly adequate and well-implemented content/social framework already... i have no idea why the developers of this game dug up gamespy. i havent seen a game that forces you to use that network in many years-- not since the time of awful tom clancy rainbow 6 shovelware.
im also a little pissed that there are no achievements/stats for steam. it's a disappointment, however minor. i guess i kinda assumed that a pc title that was this 'big' and this hyped would at least be supported by one of the more generally favoured content-distribution systems. meh. logging into steam to launch the game and logging into gamespy in order to network feels annoyingly akin to the habit of games such as GTV IV, forcing you to log-in to about 3 different networks and systems before you can properly play the full-game.

i think if you set it to log you in automatically you don't need to bother with it anymore... it doesnt ask me anymore anyway
i think im stereotypically biased because of my deep-running dislike of gamespy. it's always seemed so damn redundant to me. never good or specialised in anything. just pointless bloatware to spam up your system processes and add yet more functionalities that you really don't need. steam > all for that purpose now. whatever steam can't do / support, xfire does in turn. questionable decision on the part of the developers, to be honest.

Can I use my old Bf2 Gamespy account with this?
I don´t even know if it´s still active. Do they get deleted after some time like the BattleNet accounts?

There are still achievements though, they show up in game. Who cares if it is through steam?Uzique wrote:

ah yes, the challenges... good exp in those early on
The frequency of crashes is really starting to piss me off. The more I play the more it crashes. First it was a "general protection fault" and now when ever i try to enter a new area it's "bad name index" neither of which I can find a solution for.

if they join the game with you, all of your quests still work obviously
but if they arent as far along on a quest line that you're halfway done with, then they won't get credit
BUT! if it's a new quest you just picked up, it will complete it for your game as well
anyone want to play on pc right now? fucking bored

Modern Warfare 2 is supposed to have a peer to peer network for PC instead of dedicated servers. Honestly, why pay $60 for the PC game if they're going to ruin it like that?Miggle wrote:

Rating: 7.5 out of 10
Based off of the videos and the ads for it, I wasn't planning to get Borderlands at first. However, when I found out my cousin was getting it, I decided to take advantage of the pre-order deal with him. The first day, I didn't like it because there's a few things you have to work out when you first get it. First of all, Borderlands uses a peer to peer network via Gamespy. Gamespy sucks, period. However, if you forward the ports for the game ( Joining & Hosting Games Guide ), you shouldn't have any problems. I just ended up using my old Battlefield 2 Gamespy ID they made us sign up for in the beginning. Once you get over the Gamespy mess, it's a phenomenal game.
I started playing as a Hunter class aka Mordecai. So far, I got him up to lvl 16 before I realized how important elements effect the game. So, I decided to start fresh with a Siren. I've beat Playthrough 1 with her and now she's lvl 41 and in the early stages of Playthrough 2. I've also messed with the other two classes a bit: Bezerker and Soldier. The Soldier seems pretty weak at first, but he has some really nice Support skills later on or gets better as an individual should you chose the "Infantry" route of skills. On my Bezerker, I plan to mainly build him toward the "Tank" spec, because I'd like to see how he does in front with his fists later in the game. Overall, no matter which class you chose, each of the character types are wicked fun to play.
When deciding whether or not you should get this game, be sure to take in to account your computer specifications. My cousin has a laptop that can handle some games; he can handle things like 2142 and Left 4 Dead pretty smoothly. However, he didn't quite meet the specs for Borderlands yet tried to play it anyway. Overall, his game was pretty choppy. On the other hand, I play on a medium-grade, gaming desktop. I run the game effortlessly and I find the effects to be pretty badass. The "bazillion guns" are pretty badass as well. Just make sure you can handle the game before you buy it. In my cousin's case, he's decided to finally shell out the dough for a desktop that can handle anything.
Overall, Borderlands is an exciting, addictive, fun game. If you don't have a Gamespy ID, be sure to get one before you try to play it. If you'd like to be able to host games, be sure you read the guide on how to set things up or you'll be playing with yourself. No matter which class you chose, you can still use any gun in the game. Your gaming style might help you decide which character to chose. Don't forget to make sure you have the right equipment to handle the game. Overall, I give Borderlands a 7.5 out of 10; it would be a 9 out of 10 if it weren't for the damn Gamespy issue and having to manually forward ports.
I hope you find this review helpful!
Enjoy!
-Mike
