My Nokia N82 rapes the iPhone any day.

Only thing that the iphone has that the N82 doesn't, is the touch screen.

Why are people slagging it off so much? Okay, it may be a little more expensive than your average contract phone but it is fantastic to use and the simplicity of it alongside its potential makes it a great phone. When you want it its there, no hidden menus or sea of buttons. Simple but effective.

lol, you must be joking.

Certainly, it's simple to use, but that's not that difficult to do. If you're buying an iPhone, it's usually because you KNOW how to make it work (though not always).

Windows Mobile is an amazingly simple OS to use, as is Android. Nothing hidden there. I paid €19 for my HTC Magic. Would've had to pay €49, but I had some discount points when I signed a new contract with my carrier. Had I signed up and wanted the iPhone, I would've paid 3 times that for a 3GS. I could've had the 3G for a little less than the Android, but I wouldn't have gotten what I wanted. I've not used the new Palm WebOS, but I would love it. I almost held out for the Pre until I looked and not a single carrier had publicly announced they were going to offer it in Austria and I needed a new contract then, so I couldn't really hold out for it too long.

Sorry, but the ONLY thing the iPhone has above other smart phones is, again, the hardware. Nice thing about that fabulous and oh so powerful hardware, is that it gets nice and hot and damages the case of the phone and chews through your battery a lot faster than otherwise. What's worse? You can't even replace the iPhone battery yourself! You have to send/bring it to Apple to let them do anything on the phone. What a money maker that one is!

we're a blackberry outfit, for the most part. we do have some iphones in our network. a senior engineer came into see our IT manager, and asked to trade out. he said "Can it be done?" to which the manager said "Yes, after some grovelling and some software changes. [on our system, not the phone]
Plus, you'll have to buy the phone." "But why, we get the blackberrys for free?" "Exactly . . ." i walked away laughing.

I prefer Android to iPhone OS, but the Android phones are woefully underpowered. The HTC Hero really disappointed hardware-wise. Hopefully the next generation HTC Android phones will feature newer hardware, but as always they'll arrive in the US a year after launch under some stupid name and locked to a retarded carrier.

I have an iPhone 2g and I'm getting a 3Gs today... I dont know why you all are hating on them.  Best phones I've ever owned. Also, I agree with kim.. It can save you from bears, and they are a real threat here in Colorado.

sounds to me like this thread is no more than the average: Apple blows and Pc/Windows pwn.

when the iphone first came out, it had a shit load of problems, frankly back then apple making a cell phone was a major fail. then the 3g came out, still had its problems. 3gs which i have, is pretty solid. i got the 32 gb. i look at the iphone as your average "swiss army knife" in terms of tech. and people here are right, look at how much they charge for features/ their godly applications. to make the most of your iphone you have to spend a crap load of money on applications. the free ones are total shit, save a few. yes i agree with the SMS problem iphone users have. quite frankly, i dont see the big deal with sms when theres facebook, twitter, etc to share video's and pics. Apple just like blizzard has found the "golden cow" that they can make money over and over again.

the biggest problem with the iphone 3gs is 1) it cost more than the average phone 2) Gay-T and T service sucks soo much ass, i have dropped calls every now and then. but then again there are jailbreak iphones running $800 USD on ebay. 3) built in battery, in a nutshell, apple wants me to buy a new phone. WTF apple .

Im hoping within 1 1/2 years from now verizon will have the iphone, however im getting this feeling there going to water down the iphones capabilities. Besides V-cast sucks. and its going to suck for those who have a crap load of songs on Itunes only to find out they cant use it on "verizon iphones" . in short , verizon better not fuck this one up.... again.

believe me , my iphone beats all the cell phones i have bought in the past. in the past i had verizon and sprint. verizon had better service but their phones are not much different today than last year. Blackberry storm= epic fail.  my friend has the BB storm, damn thing turns off by itself sometimes.

is that the only example you can cite?

in a company with 335 users, between three states and six separate locations, your little "my friend says" will not dissuade me
my opinion. real world usage, company e-mail support, call reliability, call availability, and cost.

The iPhone, or more so smart phones have changed my life. It's like bringing a personal computer along with u in ur pocket wherever u go. The iPhone, as well as all the other newer smartphones are just the beginning of a new society that will become dependent on thier phones to the extent that our current society has become dependent on the pc.

I believe to get the real potential out of the device is through apps and jailbreak. I have a 2nd gen iPod touch, which can do most things as the iPhone.

Now apps are great, its what makes the iPhone do what it can with its tech. But jailbreaking is the best part as it allows you to do things apple don't allow i.e. full bluetooth support, use of p2p client on device etc.

I dunno about a waste of potential, but it is a waste of money for sure.

You know, it's Apple and all. There's always better and cheaper alternatives.

I used to think the iPhone was a bit shit.

But now that I've seen the potential it has realised by corporate structures using it properly I have completely changed my mind. They are amazing.

iPhones are what you make of them. They can be incredible or they can be a gimmicky toy that isn't actually that good at being a phone.

You don't have to consider it morally anything. It's good marketing. It's what Apple do, and why they are successful.

You don't need the best product, just the best marketing strategy. Case in point, iPod headphones are totally shit. But you'll recognise them for the plain reason they are white and were marketed with images like this:

http://i37.tinypic.com/2gwib6v.jpg

It's got zero to do with morality.
BOSE was here. Apple suck at advertising.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
