im not talking hormones, but on a more genetic level that we all reside on a slider of sorts - with your "menly men" being far left and people like dauntless hovering over the middle area, and womanly women on the far right?

i dunno but i definitely agree with the theory that dauntless is hovering ambiguously over the "middle area"

I remember reading about the idea of a third chromosone determining sexuality, or rather: How masculine a male is, or how femininine a female is, potentially resulting in feminine males and masculine females. Could have been bull shit (sounds like it to me), and no idea where I read it.

it's easy to assign a number or variable that works for our current parameters, but gravity has proven to be "not exactly that simple" and gender may not be either.

ive read a lot on the philosophical and psychological ideas of sexuality... can't comment on the concrete biology of it, though.

there is a psychoanalytic notion that a newborn child, for the first significant stages of its life, is essentially asexual. not even a case of nature vs. nurture... there is a tabula rasa in the very beginning and the individual has no concept of masculinity or femininity at all, regardless of sexual organs or genetics. i suppose there's some credibility in that. after all, it is the human condition that divides us between male and female, more than the straight practicalities of physiognomy.

The variables are what you eliminated in your question - hormones. Hormones balance how masculine and feminine people are. From a biological perspective there is a concrete definition - xx or xy. From a psychosocial perspective, hormones and current social definitions of gender determine how much of a male or female someone is.

Surely there could be genetic sets that regulate the amount of hormones a person produces or even is likely to produce, but that is genetics playing on the hormones themselves, not genetics manipulating the xx or xy base or even genetics acting against outside forces not related to hormones.
